Abstract
투명 기판, 내부 전방 광확산층, 복수의 제1전극, 패터닝된 지지층, 복수의 광 필름 및, 복수의 제2전극을 구비하는 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이가 제공된다. 내부 전방 광확산층은 투명 기판 상에 있고, 제1전극은 내부 전방 광확산층 상에 있다. 패터닝된 지지층은 제1전극 사이의 내부 전방 광확산층 상에 있다. 광 필름은 제1전극 상에 있고 제2전극은 각각의 제1전극 상에 위치한다. 제2전극은 패터닝된 지지층을 통해 지지된다. 또한, 에어 갭이 제2전극과 각각의 제1전극 사이에 있다.
Description
본 발명은 광 간섭형의 컬러 디스플레이에 관한 것이다. 더욱 상세하게는, 본 발명은 향상된 컬러 시프트(shift) 및 콘트라스트 비(CR; Cotrast Ratio)를 가지는 광 간섭형의 컬러 디스플레이에 관한 것이다.
현재, 액정 디스플레이(LCD; Liquid Crystal Display), 유기 발광 소자(OLED; Organic Light-Emitting Diode) 또는, 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널(PDP; Plasma Diaplay Panel)과 같은 경량이고 슬림한 평판 패널 디스플레이가 일상 생활에 널리 사용되고 있다. 특히, 액정 패널은 주류의 디스플레이 중 하나가 되었다. 하지만, 대부분의 LCD는 좁은 시야각, 보통의 반응 시간, 천역색화를 위한 컬러 필터의 필요 및, 광원의 낮은 광학적 이용과 백 라이트 모듈에 의한 에너지 소모를 유발하는 편광기의 필요를 포함하는 다수의 결점을 여전히 가진다.
LCD의 구동 효율을 향상시키기 위해, 광 간섭 디스플레이로 불리우는 새로운 형태의 LCD가 개발되었다. 광 간섭 패널은 광 간섭 변조기의 어레이를 구비한다. 각 광 간섭 변조기는 투명 전극, 반사 전극 및, 반사 전극을 지지하는 지지층을 포함한다. 지지층의 지지를 통해, 특정 두께의 에어 갭이 반사 전극과 투명 전극 사이에 형성된다. 광 간섭 변조기의 투명 전극으로부터 입사하는 광은 에어 갭을 통과하여 제2전극에 입사한다. 제2전극에 입사한 광은 역으로 반사하여 투명 전극을 통과하여 광 변조기로부터 출사한다. 상이한 두께의 에어 갭을 통과하는 광은 상이한 광 간섭도를 초래할 수 있으므로, 상이한 컬러가 생성된다. 예를 들어, 레드 광, 그린 광 및, 블루 광은 이런 방식으로 생성될 수 있다. 또한, 광 간섭 변조기 내부의 반사 전극의 설계는, 광 간섭 변조기가 '온' 또는 '오프'로 스위치하여 패널 상의 스폿을 조명하거나 어둡게 할 수 있도록, 마이크로 전기기계적 시스템(MEMS: Micro electro-Mechanical System)과 통합되어야 한다.
상술한 광 간섭 디스플레이 내부의 광 간섭 변조기는적합한 컬러 포인트를생성하기 위한 별도의 컬러 필터 또는 편광기를 필요로 하지 않으므로 일부 생산 경비를 절약할 수 있다. 또한, 각 광 간섭 변조기는 거의 전력을 소모하지 않으며, 전기 신호에 신속하게 반응하고, 이중 안정 상태에서 동작한다. 따라서, 광 간섭 디스플레이는 휴대폰, 개인 디지털 보조기(PDA; Personal Digital Assistant), 전자 북(e-book) 등과 같은 대부분의 휴대 장치를 포함하는 저전력 소모품에 적합하다.
도 1은 종래의 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이의 구조의 개략적인 단면도이다. 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이, 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이(100)는 투명 기판(110), 패터닝된 지지층(120), 복수의 제1전극(130), 복수의 광 필름(140) 및, 복수의 제2전극(150)을 주로 구비한다. 일반적으로, 투명 전극(110)은 유리 기판 또는 투명 물질로 이루어진 기판이다. 패터닝된 지지층(120)은 제2전극(150)의 에지를 지지하도록 투명 기판(110) 상에 위치한다. 제1전극(130)도 또한 투명 기판(110) 상에 위치한다. 제1전극(130)은 인듐틴옥사이드(ITO; Indium-tin-oxide)를 포함하는 물질을 사용하여 제조된 투명전극이다. 광 필름(140)은 제1전극(130) 상에 위치한다. 일반적으로, 광 필름(140)은 복수의 고 유전율 필름과 저 유전율 필름이 교대로 배열된 다중층을 가지는 복합 스택이다. 제2전극(150)은 제1전극(130)의 상부에 위치한다. 패터닝된 지지층(120)의 지지를 통해, 제2전극(150)은 제전극(130)의 상부에 위치한다. 제2전극(150)은 고 반사 금속 물질을 사용하여 일반적으로 제조된다.
일반적으로, 종래의 광 간섭 컬러 패널은 각각이 상이한 에어 갭 두께를 가지는 복수의 광 간섭 변조기를 구비한다. 도 1에 도시된 바와 같이, 제2전극(150)과 제1전극(130) 사이의 에어 갭은 상이한 광 간섭 변조기에 대해 상이하게 된다. 컬러 광을 생성하기 위해, 광 간섭 변조기는 세 개의 상이한 에어 갭 간격(d1, d2, d3)를 가지도록 설계된다. 에어 갭 간격(d1)을 가지는 광 간섭 변조기는 레드 광을 방출하고; 에어 갭 간격(d2)을 가지는 광 간섭 변조기는 블루 광을 방출하고; 에어 갭 간격(d3)을 가지는 광 간섭 변조기는 그린 광을 방출한다. 즉, 광이 외부로부터 입사하여 투명 기판(110), 제1전극(130) 및, 광 필름(140)을 통과할 때, 상기 광은 각각의 제2전극(150)에 도달하기 전 상이한 에어 갭 두께(d1, d2, d3)를 통과하여야 할 필요가 있다.
그 후, 상기 광은 제2전극(150)에 의해 역으로 반사된 다음 투명 전극(110)으로부터 출사한다. 상이한 에어 갭 두께에서의 상이한 광 간섭도로 인해, 레드 광, 그린 광 및, 블루 광이 생성된다.
종래의 광 간섭 변조기에서, 제2전극(150)은 양호한 기계적 특성을 가지는 반사 물질을 사용하여 제조되어야 한다. 제2전극(150)과 제1전극(130)이 바이어스 전압에 결합될 때, 제2전극(150)은 전기적 인력으로 인해 제1전극(130)을 향해 쉬프트할 수 있다. 제2전극(150)의 어떠한 움직임도 에어 갭(d1, d2, d3)의 미소 변화를 유도할 수 있다. 에어 갭(d1, d2, d3)의 두께에 있어 미소 변화를 통하여, 상기 디스플레이 내의 다양한 광 간섭 변조기(픽셀)는 '온' 또는 '오프' 상태로 스위칭될 수 있다.
광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이(100)에 있어서, 디스플레이 상의 이미지는 컬러 시프트의 강화와 콘트라스트 비의 열화로 인해 사용자의 시야각에 의해 영향을 받을수 있다. 따라서, 종래 기술은 컬러 시프트와 콘트라스트 비를 향상시키도록 투명 기판(110)의 외부 표면에 광확산판(160)의 부착을 종종 요구한다. 하지만, 광확산판의 부착은 컬러 디스플레이(100)의 전체적인 두께(2mm 정도의 부가적인 두께)를 증가시킬 뿐만 아니라, 물질적인 경비를 증가시킨다.
따라서, 본 발명의 목적은 패널의 외부에 광확산판을 부착시키는 대신 패널의 내부에 필름층을 형성함으로써 향상된 컬러 시프트와 콘트라스트 비를 가지는 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이를 제공하는 것이다.

상기 목적과 다른 장점을 달성하기 위해 그리고 본 발명의 목적에 따라, 여기에서 구체화되고 넓게 설명된 대로, 본 발명은 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이를 제공한다. 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이는 투명 기판, 내부 전방 광확산층, 복수의 제1전극, 패터닝된 지지층, 복수의 광 필름 및, 복수의 제2전극을 주로 구비한다. 상기 내부 전방 광확산층은 상기 투명 기판 상에 위치한다. 상기 제1전극은 상기 내부 전방 광확산층 상에 위치한다. 상기 패터닝된 지지층도 또한 상기 내부 전방 광확산층 상에 위치하지만 상기 제1전극 사이에 위치한다. 상기 광 필름은 상기 제1전극의 상부에 위치한다. 상기 제2전극은 상기 각각의 제1전극의 상부에 위치하고 상기 패터닝된 지지층에 의해 지지된다. 또한, 각 제1 및 제2전극의 쌍 사이에 에어 갭이 있다.

도 2는 본 발명의 바람직한 제1실시예에 따른 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이 구조의 개략적인 단면도이다. 도 2에 도시된 바와 같이, 광 간섭 컬러 패널(200)은 투명 전극(210), 내부 전방 광확산층(300), 패터닝된 지지층(220), 복수의 제1전극(230), 복수의 광 필름(240) 및, 복수의 제2전극(250)을 주로 구비한다.
예를 들어, 내부 전방 광확산층(300)은 투명 기판(210)의 전 표면을 도포하며 투명 기판(210)의 상부에 위치한다. 패터닝된 지지층(220)도 또한제2전극(250)의 에지를 지지하도록 투명 기판(210)의 상부에 위치한다. 제1전극(230)은 투명 기판(210) 상에 위치한다. 광 필름(240)은 제1전극(230) 상에 위치한다. 제2전극(250)은 각각의 제1전극(230)의 상부에 위치하고 패터닝된 지지층(220)을 통해 지지된다.

도 4는 본 발명의 바람직한 제3실시예에 따른 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이 구조의 개략적인 단면도이다. 도 4에 도시된 바와 같이, 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이는 제1 및 제2실시예와 유사한 구조를 가진다. 하나의 주된 차이점은 내부 전방 광확산층(300)과 내부 후방 광확산층(400)이 광 간섭 컬러 패널(200)의 내부에 형성된다는 것이다. 내부 전방 광확산층(300)과 내부 후방 광확산층(400)을 통합한 후, 컬러 시프트 및 콘트라스트 비 열화가 향상되어 광 간섭 컬러 패널(200)의 전체적인 성능 향상을 가져온다.
결론적으로 광 간섭 컬러 패널은 적어도 다음의 장점을 가진다:
1. 종래의 부착된 광확산판을 대체하여 내부 전방 광확산층 및 내부 후방 광확산층은 선택적으로 채용되거나 둘 다 함께 사용되어 컬러 시프트와 콘트라스트 비의 열화를 향상된다.
2. 내부 전방 광확산층 및/또는 내부 후방 광확산층은 플라즈마 강화 화학 기상 증착법을 실행함으로써 제조될 수 있다다. 본 제조방법은 다양한 광확산층의 분산을 포함한 광학적 특성을 조절하는데 더 효과적이다. 즉, 패널의 전체적인 휘도가 증가된다.
다양한 수정과 변형이 본 발명의 기술적 사상을 벗어나지 않고 이루어질 수 있다는 것은 당업자에게 명백할 것이다. 상술한 관점에서, 본 발명의 수정과 변형이 다음의 청구범위와 그 등가물의 영역 내에 포함된다면 본 발명은 그것들을 포괄한다는 것이 의도된다.

- 제3항에 있어서, 상기 내부 후방 광확산층은,상기 제1전극 상에 위치하고, 상기 패터닝된 지지층에 의해 지지되는 제3필름;상기 제3전극 상의 제4필름;을 더 포함하고,상기 제3필름과 상기 제4필름 사이의 경계면은 분산면을 형성하는 것을 특징으로 하는 광 간섭 컬러 디스플레이.
