Description

本発明は、積層型(stacked)電界発光(electroluminescent)デバイス、さらに詳しくは向上した効率のために励起子障壁層を使用する積層型電界発光デバイスに関する。
(背景)
電流で励起されると発光する薄膜材料を使用する有機発光デバイス(OLED)は、フラットパネルディスプレイ技術の次第に一般的な形のものになりつつある。OLED構造には、現在、三つの支配的なタイプ、即ち「ダブルヘテロ構造」(DH)OLED、「シングルヘテロ構造」(SH)OLED、および単層重合体OLEDがある。DH OLEDでは、図1Aに示されるとおり、透明基板10が陽極層11でコーティングされている。その陽極11の上に薄い(100〜500Å)有機正孔輸送層(HTL)12が堆積されている。そのHTL12の表面には薄い(典型的には50〜500Å)発光層(EL)13が堆積されている。そのEL13は、厚さ100〜500Åの電子輸送層14(ETL)から注入された電子と、HTL12からの正孔との再結合部位を提供する。従来技術のETL、ELおよびHTL用材料の例は米国特許第5,294,870号明細書に開示されており、その開示を引用により本明細書に援用する。
図1Aに示されるデバイスは、金属コンタクト15、16、および上面電極17の堆積により完成する。コンタクト15および16は、典型的には、インジウムまたはTi/Pt/Auから加工される。電極17は有機ETL14と直接接触しているMg/Ag17'のような合金、およびそのMg/Agの上の、金(Au)または銀(Ag)のような不透明な高仕事関数金属層17″より成る二層構造であることが多い。上面電極17とコンタクト15および16との間に適正なバイアス電圧が印加されると、発光層13から基板10を通して発光が起こる。
SH OLEDは、図1Bに示されるとおり、ELおよびETLの両層としての役割を果たす多機能層13′を使用するものである。図1Bのデバイスの一つの制限は、その多機能層13′が良好な電子輸送能を有していなければならないと言うことである。さもなければ、図1Aのデバイスについて示されるように、別々のEL層およびETL層を含めなければならない。
単層重合体OLEDは図1Cに示される。図示されるとおり、このデバイスは陽極層3がコーティングされているガラス基板1を含む。例えばスピンコーティングされた重合体の有機薄層5が陽極層3を覆って形成されており、それが前記デバイスのHTL、ETL、およびELの機能を全て与えている。金属電極層6がその有機層5を覆って形成されている。金属は、典型的には、Mgまたは他の常用の低仕事関数金属である。
OLEDからの発光は、典型的には、蛍光または燐光に因る。燐光をうまく利用することが、有機電界発光デバイスの極めて大きな将来性を確保する。例えば、燐光の一つの利点は、燐光デバイス中における三重項に基づく全ての励起子(これはEL中での正孔と電子との再結合によって形成される)が、ある種特定の電界発光材料においてエネルギー移動とルミネッセンス(luminescence)とに関与し得ると言うことである。これに対して、蛍光デバイスにおける、一重項に基づく励起子はその極く少ない割合しか蛍光ルミネッセンスをもたらさない。

蛍光デバイスに比較して、燐光デバイスには、しかし、有用な電界発光をもたらすために克服しなければならない幾つかの潜在的な欠点がある。例えば、長範囲の双極子−双極子結合(フェルスター移動)はスピンの保存によって禁止されるので、エネルギー移動が比較的遅い。効率も、電流密度、発光部位の飽和を引き起こす長い燐光寿命、および三重項−三重項消滅により急速に低下する。加えて、三重項拡散距離が、一般的には、約200Åの典型的な一重項拡散距離と比較して長い(例えば、>1400Å)。従って、蛍光デバイスがそれらの可能性を達成しようとすれば、デバイス構造は三重項の性質に最適なものとされることが必要である。
(発明の概要)
本発明は、実質的に透明な陽極;その陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;その正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;その発光層を覆う障壁層(blocking layer);その障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;およびその電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含んで成るピクセルを含んでいる発光デバイスを包含する。
本発明のデバイスにおいて使用される障壁層(blocking layer)は、励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げ、それによりそれら励起子を発光層内に実質的に保持してデバイス効率を高める。
本発明の一つの利点は、本発明により向上した電界発光有機発光デバイスが提供されると言うことである。
本発明のもう一つの利点は、本発明により便利かつ効率的な燐光電界発光デバイスが提供されると言うことである。
(定義)
本明細書で用いられる次の成句または用語は次の意味を有する。
「Alq3」とは、アルミニウム・トリス(8−ヒドロキシキノリン)のことである。
「陽極」とは、負に帯電した陰極から流れる電子の、正に帯電した受容体のことである。
「バンドギャップ」とは、ある物質の最低空軌道とその最高被占軌道とのエネルギー準位差のことである。
「BCP」とは、バソクプロイン(bathocuproine)のことである。
「障壁層(blocking layer)」とは、励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げる材料から成る層のことである。
「陰極」とは、正に帯電した陽極に流れる電子を出す負に帯電したデバイスのことである。
「CBP」とは、カルバゾールビフェニルのことである。
「EL」は「発光層」のことで、それは正孔と電子が再結合して、光を放射する励起子を生成させる層である。

(詳細な説明)
本発明は、実質的に透明な陽極;その陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;その正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;その発光層を覆う障壁層;その障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;およびその電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含んで成る発光デバイスを包含する。本発明のデバイスにおいて使用される障壁層は、励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げ、かくしてそれら励起子を発光層内に実質的に保持してデバイス効率を高める。
本発明のデバイスは、燐光電界発光を受ける発光材料と共に使用されるのが最も有利である。このようなデバイスにおいて、正孔輸送層からの正孔は、発光層において電子輸送層からの電子と再結合して三重項に基づく励起子を形成する。そのような励起子は発光前に比較的長い距離を拡散し、かくしてそれら励起子のある割合が発光前に発光層から拡散して出ていく可能性が高まる。ある場合には、励起子は陰極まで拡散し、その陰極によって消光せしめられ、非放射励起子の減衰を引き起こす。このような現象を最小限に抑えるのを助けるために、本発明は、電子の拡散、通過は許すが、励起子の拡散、通過はこれを実質的に妨げる障壁層を使用するものである。この障壁層は正孔の拡散、通過も実質的に妨げることができる。発光層中で生成した励起子は、従って、その発光層に閉じ込められ、かくしてデバイスの性能および効率が実質的に向上せしめられる。
本発明の障壁層は、その最低空軌道とその最高被占軌道との間のバンドギャップによって特徴付けられる。本発明によれば、このバンドギャップがその障壁層を通る励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げ、しかも完成した電界発光デバイスのターンオン(turn-on)電圧には最小限の影響しか及ぼさない。バンドギャップは、従って、発光層中に生成した励起子が障壁層中に存在することができなくなるように、それら励起子のエネルギー準位より大きいことが好ましい。
本発明の一態様を図2に示す。デバイス100は、実質的に透明な基板110、実質的に透明な陽極111、正孔輸送層112、発光層113、障壁層114、電子輸送層115、および陰極117を含む。発光層113は場合によっては電子輸送層としても機能する。所望によっては、低仕事関数(好ましくは、<4eV)の金属層116が電子輸送層115の上を覆って形成される。金属層116はコンタクト材料、および衝突する光ビームを反射するための反射性材料の両材料としての役割を果たす。発光層113からの発光は、陰極117と陽極111との間に電圧が印加されたときに起こる。障壁層114は、発光層113から電子輸送層115への励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げる。励起子は、また、発光層113と正孔輸送層112との間の界面におけるエネルギー障壁によって、正孔輸送層に拡散するのも実質的に妨げられる。励起子は、かくして、発光層113内に実質的に閉じ込められる。
デバイス100において用いられる材料には、それぞれの層(1つ又は複数)の目的(1つ又は複数)を実現する任意の適切な材料がある。次の材料は例示目的だけのために与えられるものである。例えば、基板110は、一般に、ガラス、石英、サファイヤまたプラスチックなどの透明な材料から作られる。基板110は、例えば硬質であったり、可撓性であったり、および/または所望される形状に付形される。陽極111は、インジウムスズ酸化物などの、実質的に透明な任意の導電性材料から成る。金属層116に適した候補材料にMg、Mg/Ag、およびLi/Alがある。陰極117は、例えばITO、Al、Ag、またはAuから造られる。
障壁層114は、それを通っての励起子の拡散を実質的に妨げるのに十分なバンドギャップを有する任意の適切な材料から造られる。例として挙げると、障壁層114に適した候補材料にNPD、CBP、BCP、およびAlq3がある。障壁層材料の選択は発光層に用いられる材料の選択に左右される。なぜなら、障壁層用材料は、発光層中で形成される励起子のエネルギー準位よりも大きいバンドギャップを有することが必要なだけであり、そしてそのバンドギャップは発光層に用いられる材料に左右されるからである。例として挙げると、発光層113がCBPから成るとき、障壁層114はBCPから造られる。
HTL、EL、およびETLにおいて用いられる材料は、この技術分野で公知である。例えば、青色発光には、発光層113は、例えば三価金属キノラート錯体、シッフ塩基二価金属錯体、金属アセチルアセトネート錯体、金属二座配位子錯体、ビスホスホネート、金属マレオニトリルジチオラート錯体、分子電荷移動錯体、芳香族および複素環式重合体および希土類元素混合キレートなどの、任意の適切な青色発光性有機化合物を含んで成る。層113に用いることができる金属二座配位子錯体は、式MDL4 2(式中、Mは周期律表第3〜13族の三価金属およびランタニド類から選ばれる)を有するものである。好ましい金属イオンはAl+3、Ga+3、In+3、およびSc+3である。Dは、2−ピコリルケトン類、2−キナルジルケトン類、および2−(o−フェノキシ)ピリジンケトン類などの二座配位子である。L4の好ましい基には、アセチルアセトネート;式OR3R(式中、R3はSiおよびCから選ばれ、そしてRは水素、置換および非置換のアルキル基、アリール基および複素環式基から選ばれる)の化合物;3,5−ジ(t−bu)フェノール;2,6−ジ(t−bu)フェノール;2,6−ジ(t−bu)クレゾール;およびH2Bpz2がある。例として示すと、アルミニウム(ピコリルメチルケトン)ビス[2,6−ジ(t−bu)フェノキシド]の固相におけるフォトルミネッセンスの測定から得られる波長は420nmである。この化合物のクレゾール誘導体も420nmと測定された。アルミニウム(ピコリルメチルケトン)ビス(OSiPh3)およびスカンジウム(4−メトキシ−ピコリル−メチルケトン)ビス(アセチルアセトネート)は各々433nmと測定されたが、一方アルミニウム[2−(O−フェノキシ)ピリジン]ビス[2,6−ジ(t−bu)フェノキシド]は450nmと測定された。
緑色OLED材料の例には、式SnL1 2L2 2(式中、L1はサリチルアルデヒド類、サリチル酸またはキノラート類(例えば、8−ヒドロキシキノリン)から選ばれる)を有するものなどのスズ(iv)金属錯体がある。L2は置換および非置換のアルキル基、アリール基および複素環式基であることができる。例えば、L1がキノラートであり、そしてL2がフェニルであるとき、スズ(iv)金属錯体は504nmの発光波長を有する。
赤色OLED材料の例には、C.E.ジョンソン(C. E. Johnson)らがJournal of the American Chemical Society,105,1795(1983)の「ルミネッセンス性イリジウム(I)、ロジウム(I)、および白金(II)ジチオラート錯体(Luminescent Iridium (I), Rhodium (I), and Platinum (II) Dithiolate Complexes)」に記載するものなどの二価金属マレオニトリルジチオラート(「mnt」)錯体がある。例えば、mnt[Pt(Pph3)]は652nmの特性発光波長を有する。
追加のOLED材料はこの技術分野で公知である(例えば、「有機電界発光多色画像ディスプレイデバイス(Organic Electroluminescent Multicolor Image Display Device)」と題されるタング(Tang)らの米国特許第5,294,870号明細書;ホソカワ(Hosokawa)らのApplied Physics Letters,67,3853−55(1995年12月)における「新規なドーパントを含むジスチリルアリーレン発光層からの高効率の青色電界発光(Highly efficient blue electroluminescence from a distyrylarylene emitting layer with a new dopant)」;アダチ(Adachi)らのApplied Physics Letters,56,799−801(1990年2月)における「青色発光有機電界発光デバイス(Blue light-emitting organic electroluminescent devices)」;バローズ(Burrows)らのApplied Physics Letters,69,2959−61(1996年11月)における「調色可能な有機発光デバイス(Color-Tunable Organic Light Emitting Devices)」を参照されたい)。これら文献の全開示を引用により本明細書に援用する。ホソカワらの文献に記載されたものなどのジスチリルアリーレン誘導体が好ましい一群の化合物である。
本発明のデバイスの発光層において用いることができる燐光および蛍光染料も、この技術分野において公知である。参照によりその開示を本明細書に援用する米国特許第4,769,292号および同第5,294,870号明細書がその例である。燐光物質系染料は、例えば固体重合体マトリックス中に真空蒸着されるか、またはポリメチルメタクリレートなどのマトリックス重合体中に溶解される。緑色蛍光染料の例は、シアニン類、メロシアニン類、錯体のシアニン類およびメロシアニン類、オキソノール(oxonol)類、ヘミオキソノール(hemioxonol)類、スチリル類、メロスチリル類、およびストレプトシアニン(streptocyanine)類を含めたポリメチン系染料である。赤色蛍光染料の例は、4−ジシアノメチレン−4H−ピラン類および4−ジシアノメチレン−4H−チオピラン類である。
本発明の一態様において、発光層は燐光電界発光をし、そして有機ホスト中の燐光物質を含む。一つの好ましい態様において、その発光層はPtOEPでドープされたCBPから成る。
上記の層および材料のいずれに対してもその堆積技術は、この技術分野において周知である。例えば、OLED層(即ち、HTL層、EL層、およびETL層)を堆積させる好ましい方法は、熱蒸着法(または、重合体LEDが使用される場合はスピンコーティング法)によるものであり;金属層を堆積させる好ましい方法は、熱または電子ビーム蒸着法によるものであり;そしてインジウムスズ酸化物を堆積させる好ましい方法は、電子ビーム蒸着法またはスパッタリング法によるものである。
本発明は、効率的な、高輝度の、単色または多色の、任意の大きさを持つフラットパネルディスプレイを提供するのに用いられる。このようなディスプレイ上に作り出される画像は、個々のLEDの大きさに左右されるが、フルカラーの、任意の解像度の文またはイラストであることができる。本発明のディスプレイデバイスは、従って、ビルボードや標識、コンピューターモニター、並びに電話機のような電気通信装置、テレビジョン、大面積の壁用スクリーン、劇場用スクリーンおよびスタジアム用スクリーンを含めて、極めて広範囲の用途に適している。本明細書に記載される構造体は、例えば、発光デバイス中の複数のピクセル中に、または単一ピクセルデバイスの一部として含まれる。さらに、本明細書に記載される構造体はレーザーデバイスの一部として使用することもできる。
本発明を、次の非限定実施例を参照してさらに説明する。
実施例
図3に示される燐光電界発光デバイス500を、常用の堆積技術を用いて形成した。このデバイス500はガラス基板510の上に次の層を堆積して含んでいた:インジウムスズ酸化物から成る陽極511、NPDから成る厚さ約450ÅのHTL512、約8%のPtOEPでドープされたCBPから成る厚さ約400ÅのEL513、BCPから成る厚さ約80Åの障壁層514、Alq3から成る厚さ約250ÅのETL515、マグネシウム−銀合金から成る厚さ約1000Åのコンタクト層516、および銀から成る厚さ500Åの陰極517。
障壁層514は、EL513からETL515への励起子の拡散を妨げるためにデバイス500中に含められた。層514の励起子阻止(exciton blocking)機能は、図4(a)および4(b)におけるスペクトルの比較により証明される。図4(a)には、障壁層514を有しない(但し、他の点ではデバイス500と同一)の発光スペクトルがある範囲の電流密度について示されている。障壁層514を有しないこのデバイスでは、Alq3・ETL515からλ=約520nmに強い緑色発光が見られたが、これに対してデバイス500ではそのような発光は観察されず、この場合障壁層514がETL515への励起子の拡散とそれに対応するAlq3の発光を妨げていた(図4(b))。
障壁層514の使用は、EL513からの励起子の拡散を妨げることに加えて、三重項励起子(triplets)をそのEL513中に強制的に留めておくことによりデバイス効率の改善をもたらした。図5に示されるとおり、障壁層514を持たないデバイスの量子効率は100cd/m2の輝度において約0.55%まで落ちたが(曲線A)、これに対してデバイス500の量子効率は同じ輝度で約0.9%まで落ちたに過ぎなかった(曲線B)。

Claims (20)

  1. ピクセルを含んでいる発光デバイスであって、前記ピクセルが: 実質的に透明な陽極;
    前記陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;
    前記正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;
    前記発光層を覆う障壁層;
    前記障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;および、前記電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含んでなる、発光デバイス。
  2. 前記障壁層が、発光層中に形成された励起子のエネルギー準位より大きいバンドギャップにより特徴付けられる、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  3. 前記障壁層が、BCP、Alq、CBPおよびNPDからなる群から選ばれる材料を含む、請求項2に記載のデバイス。
  4. 前記障壁層がBCPを含む、請求項3に記載のデバイス。
  5. 前記発光層がPtOEPでドープされたCBPを含む、請求項4に記載のデバイス。
  6. 前記陽極がインジウムスズ酸化物を含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  7. 前記発光層が電子輸送層としても機能する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  8. 前記発光層が燐光によって発光する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  9. 前記発光層が有機ホスト中の燐光物質を含む、請求項8に記載のデバイス。
  10. 前記燐光物質がPtOEPを含み、そして前記有機ホストがCBPを含む、請求項9に記載のデバイス。
  11. 前記発光層が蛍光によって発光する、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  12. 前記陽極の下に透明な基板をさらに含んでいる、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  13. 前記基板がガラスを含む、請求項12に記載のデバイス。
  14. 前記陰極が、アルミニウム、銀、金およびそれらの合金からなる群から選ばれる金属を含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  15. 前記電子輸送層と前記陰極との間にコンタクト層をさらに含む、請求項1に記載のデバイス。
  16. 請求項1に記載のデバイスを組み込んでいる電子装置であって、コンピューター;テレビジョン;壁、劇場またはスタジアム用の大面積スクリーン;ビルボード;標識;車両;プリンター;電気通信装置;および電話機からなる群から選択される電子装置。
  17. ピクセルを含んでいる発光デバイスであって、前記ピクセルが:
    透明な基板;
    前記基板を覆う、インジウムスズ酸化物からなる実質的に透明な陽極;
    前記陽極を覆う、NPDを含む正孔輸送層;
    前記正孔輸送層を覆う、CBPを含み、燐光によって発光する発光層;
    前記発光層を覆う、BCPを含む障壁層;
    前記障壁層を覆う、Alqを含む電子輸送層;および
    前記電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極
    を含む、発光デバイス。
  18. 複数のピクセルを含んでいる多色ディスプレイデバイスであって、前記ピクセルの少なくとも一つが:
    実質的に透明な陽極;
    前記陽極を覆う正孔輸送層;
    前記正孔輸送層を覆う発光層;
    前記発光層を覆う障壁層;
    前記障壁層を覆う電子輸送層;および
    前記電子輸送層と電気的接触状態にある陰極を含む、多色ディスプレイデバイス。
  19. 前記障壁層が、発光層中で形成された励起子のエネルギー準位より大きいバンドギャップにより特徴付けられる、請求項18に記載のデバイス。
  20. 請求項18に記載のデバイスを組み込んでいる電子装置であって、コンピューター;テレビジョン;壁、劇場またはスタジアム用の大面積スクリーン;ビルボード;標識;車両;プリンター;電気通信装置;および電話機からなる群から選ばれる電子装置。
