Description
1.発明の属する技術分野
本発明は、電磁スペクトルの可視的な部分で使用する偏光光素子に関する。より具体的には、本発明は、特定の偏光の光を効率的に透過するとともに、直交する偏光の光を効果的に反射する広帯域幅ワイヤグリッド偏光子に関する。
平行な導電ワイヤのアレイを使用して無線波を偏光することは、110年以上も前にさかのぼる。一般には透明基板によって支持される薄い平行な導体のアレイの形態であるワイヤグリッドも、電磁スペクトルの赤外線部分に関する偏光子として使用されてきた。
また、下記非特許文献1には、紫外線用平面グレーティング偏光子が記載されている。

本発明の目的は、全可視スペクトルにわたって高い透過と反射の効率を提供できる、改良されたワイヤグリッド偏光子を提供することである。
本発明のこれらの目的と利点および他の目的と利点は、基板上に支持される平行な導電素子のグリッドを含み、グリッド素子と基板との間に挿入される、屈折率が低く厚さが制御された領域を伴う偏光子デバイスで実現される。
本発明の別の態様によれば、グリッド素子は,グリッド素子と基板との間に挿入された1つまたは複数の誘電膜の中、または誘電膜を通してエッチングすることによって形成されるリブによって支持される。

Claims (16)
- 第1の表面と屈折率とを有する透明基板を提供するステップと、
前記基板の前記第1の表面上に平行な素子であって、マスクを画定する素子のアレイを形成するステップと、
前記素子の間で前記基板をエッチングして、該基板から伸び、該基板の前記屈折率より小さな屈折率を伴う領域を画定するリブを形成するステップと、
を含む、可視スペクトル用の広帯域ワイヤグリッド偏光子を作成する方法。 - 前記第1の表面上に誘電膜の層を堆積させてから前記素子を形成するステップをさらに含み、前記基板をエッチングするステップはさらに、前記素子の間の膜をエッチングするステップを含むことを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の方法。
- 誘電膜の層を堆積させるステップが、フッ化マグネシウムの層を堆積させるステップを含む請求項2に記載の方法。
- 前記平行な素子のアレイを形成するステップは、0.076μmと0.2μmの間の周期を有する素子を形成するステップを含む請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記基板をエッチングするステップは、0.001μmと0.3μmの間の深さに該基板をエッチングするステップを含む請求項1から4のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記素子のアレイは可視スペクトルの光の電磁波と相互作用し、一般には第1の偏光の光のほとんどを反射し、第2の偏光の光のほとんどを透過するように構成され、
前記アレイは、前記可視スペクトル内で通常は第2の偏光のかなりの量が透過されるのではなく反射されるような共鳴効果を形成するような構成を有し、
前記素子は、前記可視スペクトル内で通常は第2の偏光のかなりの量が透過されるのではなく反射されるような共鳴効果を形成するような大きさを有し、
前記基板の屈折率よりも低い屈折率を伴う前記領域は、通常は発生する共鳴効果をより短い波長にシフトさせ、これによって共鳴効果が発生しない可視波長の帯域を広げることを特徴とする、
請求項1から5のいずれか1項に記載の方法。 - 前記マスクを画定する素子のアレイを形成するステップの後に、前記素子のアレイを除去又は置換しない
請求項1から6のいずれか1項に記載の方法。 - 前記素子のアレイは、ワイヤグリッド偏光子のワイヤとなる請求項1から7のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記ワイヤは、アルミニウム又は銀である請求項1から8のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記マスクを画定する素子は、76nmから可視光の波長の間の周期を有する
請求項1から3のいずれか1項に記載の方法。 - 前記リブは、前記基板と同一材料で形成される請求項1から10のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記基板は、約0.04μmと0.1μmの間の深さにエッチングされる
請求項1から11のいずれか1項に記載の方法。 - 前記素子の幅は前記リブの幅よりも狭い請求項1から12のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記リブは台形の断面を有する請求項1から13のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記ワイヤは約0.02μmと0.3μmの間の厚さを有する請求項1から14のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
- 前記基板はガラスであり、
前記リブは、前記基板と同一材料で形成される請求項1から15のいずれか1項に記載の方法。
