Abstract

Description
本発明は、1998年5月12日に提出した仮出願U.S.S.N.60/085,096に対して優先権を主張する。
本発明は、ディスプレイデバイス、より詳細には、ドローイングデバイスに関する。
消去可能なドローイングデバイスは公知である。消去可能なドローイングデバイスは、典型的には、黒板、紙パッド、または白板、およびチョーク、鉛筆または乾燥した消去可能なマーカーのような消去可能なマーキングデバイスからなる。
1局面において、本発明はディスプレイを特徴とする。1実施態様において、ディスプレイは、第1面および第2面を有するカプセル化したディスプレイ媒体、ディスプレイ媒体の第2面に隣接して配置された後面電極(rear electrode)、ならびに可動電極を備える。このディスプレイ媒体は、複数のカプセルを備え、各カプセルは、流体中に分散した複数の粒子を備える。可動電極は、後面電極と共に、ディスプレイ媒体にわたって電場を印加する。

(2) 前記第1面(18)に隣接して配置された保護層(18;18’;55;85;109;118;129)によって特徴付けられる、項目1に記載のディスプレイ。
(3) 前記カプセル化した双安定ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)が、実質的にUV光に対して保護的であるバインダー(19)を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目1または2のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(4) 前記可動電極(20;20’;20”;30;30’;30”;40;58;69;88;95;107;122;136)が、スタイラス(20;20’;20”;30;30’;30”;40;58;69;95;107;122;136)、電荷発生器(32;32’;32”)、電荷貯蔵デバイス(34;34’;34”)、イレーサー、スイッチの活性化の際に前記ディスプレイ媒体に印加される前記電場を逆転させるスイッチ、スタンプ、および静電印刷ヘッド(124)のいずれか1つ以上を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目1〜3のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(5) 前記電荷発生器(32;32’;32”)が、所定の時間間隔後印加電圧をゼロに下げる電気回路を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目4に記載のディスプレイ。

(a)該スタイラス(20’)の湾曲端(24)内に配置された電極チップ(26)、
(b)複数の絶縁電極(26a,26b,26c)、
(c)該スタイラスチップ(24)をカバーする誘電性コーティング;および

(7) 前記スタイラス(20”)が、複数の同心電極(26a,26b,26c)を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目4に記載のディスプレイ。
(8) 前記可動電極が滑り棒(76)を備え、該滑り棒が前記双安定ディスプレイ媒体の前記第1面にわたってスライドするという点で特徴付けられる、項目1〜5のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(9) 前記滑り棒(76)が電荷発生器を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目8に記載のディスプレイ。
(10) 前記滑り棒(76)が前記電荷発生器を活性化するアクチベータを備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目9に記載のディスプレイ。
(11) 前記可動電極(40)が第1端(42)および第2端(44)を有する書き込みデバイスを備え、その結果、前記ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)は、該第1端(42)が該ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)の前記第1面(18)に隣接して配置される場合、第1の色を表示し、そして該第2端(44)が該ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)の該第1面(18)に隣接して配置される場合、第2の色を表示するという点で特徴付けられる、項目1〜10に記載のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。

(a)前記ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)の前記第1面に隣接して配置された誘電層;
(b)該ディスプレイ媒体(54)の該第1面に隣接して配置された圧電フィルム(56)、
の1つ以上によって特徴付けられる、項目1〜12のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(14) 前記ディスプレイ媒体(106)の前記第1面の一部にわたって配置された上方電極(108)によって特徴付けられる、項目1〜13のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(15) 前記ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)が2つ以上の色の粒子を備える複数の電気泳動粒子を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目1〜14のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(16) 前記後面電極が、前記可動電極(136)の電圧と整合する電圧に設定された第一領域(132)および該可動電極(136)の電圧と異なる電圧に設定された第二領域(134)を備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目1〜15のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(17) 除去可能なディスプレイ媒体を備えるケーシング(12;52;74;82;102;112;126)によって特徴付けられる、項目1〜16のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(18) 前記ディスプレイ媒体および除去可能な後面電極を含むケーシング(12;52;74;82;102;112;126)によって特徴付けられる、項目1〜17のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(19) 前記後面電極(116;128)および/または前記ディスプレイ媒体(114;127)がローリングベルト上に配置されるという点で特徴付けられる、項目1〜18のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。
(20) 前記ディスプレイ媒体(146)が複数の色を有する複数の電気泳動粒子を備え、そして前記後面電極(144)が複数のピクセル電極(144a,144b,144c)を備え、各ピクセル電極(144a,144b,144c)が、該ディスプレイ媒体(144)の前記第1面上の選択された色の粒子を表示するための電圧に設定されるという点で特徴付けられる、項目15に記載のディスプレイ。
(21) 速度センサーによって特徴付けられる項目1〜20のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ(120)。
(22) 前記滑り棒(76)は、データ貯蔵デバイスを備えるかまたは該データ貯蔵デバイスと連絡しているか、あるいはスキャナーを備えるという点で特徴付けられる、項目8に記載のディスプレイ。
(23) タッチスクリーン(208)が前記ディスプレイ媒体の前記第1面または前記後面電極に隣接して配置されることによって特徴付けられる、項目1〜22のいずれか1項に記載のディスプレイ。

c)該可動電極(20;20’;20”;30;30’;30”;40;58;69;88;95;107;122;136)および該後面電極(14;53;104;128;144)を通して該ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)にわたって電場を印加する工程であって、該工程によって、該ディスプレイ媒体(16;54;106;114;127;146;154)の該第1面上に画像を作製する、工程、

(29) 前記工程(c)が、第1の色を有する画像を作製するために第1電場を印加する工程、および第2の色を有する画像を作製するために第2電場を印加する工程を包含するという点で特徴付けられる、項目27または28に記載の方法。
(30) 項目27〜29のいずれか1項に記載の方法であって、該方法が、項目2〜26のいずれか1項に記載の器具を使用して実施されるという点で特徴付けられる、方法。

図1aを参照して、ディスプレイ10は、ケーシング12、ケーシング12の内部に配置された後面電極14、後面電極14に隣接して配置されたカプセル化したディスプレイ媒体16、ディスプレイ媒体16に隣接して配置された保護層18、および可動電極20を備える。このディスプレイ10は、ドローイングシステムとして使用され得る。保護層18は、ドローイング表面として役立つ。可動電極20は、電荷伝導機構を備える。1実施態様において、可動電極20は、書き込みデバイスである。図1の実施態様において、書き込みデバイス20は、スタイラスを備える。あるいは、本発明のディスプレイ10は、ドローイング表面に対して移動されるロボット化アームまたは電荷保有プリントヘッドの手段によって機械的にアドレスされ得る。例えば、静電プリンターは、ドローイング表面上で描画するために使用され得る。可動電極20は、ドローイング表面18と接触する場合、可動電極20および後面電極14は、ディスプレイ媒体16にわたって電場を印加し、それによってシステム10のドローイング表面18上に画像を表示する。
