【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、装置用のユーザイ
ンターフェースの分野に係り、とりわけ機能拡張され広
くアクセスできるユーザインターフェース機能を与える
ためにウェブアクセス機能を装置に組み込むことに関す
る。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】事務機器、家庭用機器、研究所用機器
や、さまざまな他の種類の装置を含め、広範囲のさまざ
まな装置は一般に、装置特有のユーザインターフェース
機能を備える。そのような装置はガジェットと呼ぶこと
もできる。事務機器には例えば、プリンタ、ファクシミ
リ装置、複写機、さまざまな種類の通信装置および電話
装置が含まれる。家庭用装置には、テレビジョン、ビデ
オプレーヤおよびビデオレコーダ、オーディオプレーヤ
およびオーディオレコーダなどの家庭娯楽機器や、セキ
ュリティシステム、自動車、電気器具、サーモスタッ
ト、ホットタブが含まれる。研究所用機器には、オシロ

ムは、外部ウェブブラウザがコンピュータシステムにア

【課題を解決するための手段】この解決策では、装置ウ
ェブページを与えるウェブサーバを含む装置にウェブア
クセス機能が組み込まれる。この装置は、ウェブブラウ
ザから装置ウェブページにアクセスできるようにする組
み込みネットワークインターフェースを含む。ウェブブ
ラウザのユーザは、装置ウェブページを通じて装置用の
ユーザインターフェース機能にアクセスする。ウェブサ
ーバ機能は、通常、装置特有の機能を実行する、既存の
プロセッサ、メモリ、入出力回路など、装置内の既存の
回路を用いて実施され、それによって装置用の専用ウェ
ブサーバハードウェアに必要な余分のコストおよび空間
を回避することができる。

ユーザの位置から独立したものになるように、ウェブ方
法を使用する。

ケージングされ、ハイパーテキストトランスファプロト

ＨＴＴＰプロトコルによって、ウェブブラウザを実行す
るプラットフォームから独立した既存のウェブブラウザ
と通信することができる。本発明の方法では、業界で広
く使用されているアプリケーションプログラミングイン

使用を統合することができる。

ターフェースオブジェクトを含むビジュアルオブジェク
トを生成するディスプレイ４２を含む。ウェブブラウザ
４０は、ユーザが、ディスプレイ４２上に示されたオブ
ジェクトおよびＵＲＬリンクを選択できるようにする選
択装置４４を含む。ウェブブラウザ４０は、オーディオ
情報をユーザに示すことができるようにするオーディオ
機能を含むこともできる。

装置５０〜５２間の通信を可能にすることもできる。装
置５０〜５２には、電気器具、ホームセキュリティシス

ウェブページ機構を実施する装置５０〜５２は、装置特
有のユーザインターフェースウェブページを家庭ベース

ウザソフトウェアを実行するコンピュータシステムで具
体化することができる。ウェブブラウザ機能を有するそ
のようなコンピュータシステムは、Ｗｉｎｄｏｗｓプラ
ットフォーム、Ｍａｃｉｎｔｏｓｈプラットフォーム、
Ｕｎｉｘプラットフォームや、ＨＴＴＰクライアント機
能を備えＨＴＭＬファイルをレンダリングするウェブブ
ラウザソフトウェアを実行することができるその他のプ
ラットフォームを含め、さまざまな利用可能なコンピュ
ータシステムプラットフォームのうちの１つによって実
現することができる。
【００３４】ウェブブラウザ４０は、ＨＴＴＰクライア
ント機能を備えＨＴＭＬファイルをレンダリングするさ
まざまな他の装置において具体化することもできる。そ
のような装置には、テレビジョンシステムまたは電話シ
ステム向けに設計された特殊ハードウェアと、低コスト
のウェブブラウザ装置やネットワークコンピュータが含
まれる。
【００３５】ユーザは、ウェブブラウザ４０を使用して
装置１０のユーザインターフェース機能にアクセスしそ
れを制御する。ユーザは、装置１０に対応するＵＲＬを
ウェブブラウザ４０に入力する。これに対して、ウェブ
ブラウザ４０は、入力されたＵＲＬを含むＨＴＴＰコマ
ンドを家庭ベースのネットワーク３０を介して転送す
る。装置１０は、ＨＴＴＰコマンドを通信経路２２を介
して受信し、それに含まれているＵＲＬを認識する。
【００３６】一実施形態では、ウェブページ１８に関す
る情報は、プロセッサ２００によって定期的に更新さ
れ、メモリ２１０にＨＴＭＬ形式で記憶される。そのよ
うな実施形態では、プロセッサ２００は、ＨＴＴＰコマ
ンドに応答してメモリ２１０からウェブページ１８を読
み取り、そのウェブページ１８を家庭ベースのネットワ
ーク３０を介してウェブブラウザ４０へ転送する。
【００３７】代替実施形態では、プロセッサ２００は、
ウェブブラウザ４０からのＨＴＴＰコマンドに応答して
ただちにウェブページ１８を生成する。そのような実施
形態では、プロセッサ２００は、ＨＴＴＰコマンドを受
信しそれに含まれているＵＲＬを認識した後に、装置特
有のハードウェア３００から装置に関する情報を得る。
プロセッサ２００は、この情報を、ウェブページ１８を
定義するＨＴＭＬ形式でフォーマットし、このＨＴＭＬ
フォーマット済み情報を家庭ベースのネットワーク３０
を介してウェブブラウザ４０へ転送する。
【００３８】ＨＴＭＬファイルは、ウェブブラウザ４０
に対応するＵＲＬを指定するＨＴＴＰプロトコルに従っ
て転送される。ウェブブラウザ４０は、ＨＴＭＬファイ
ルを受信しウェブページ１８をディスプレイ４２上に表
示する。

ページタイトル７０と、ヘッダ部６０と、１組のＡＳＣ
ＩＩテキスト６２と、テーブル部６４と、１組のハイパ
ーリンク６６〜６８とを含む。

<TITLE>プリンタホームページ(Printer Home Page)</TI
TLE>コードによって定義される。ヘッダ部６０は、上記
に示したＨＴＭＬファイルの<H1>装置１０のホームペー
ジ(Home Page for device 10)</H1>によって定義され
る。ＡＳＣＩＩテキスト６２は、上記に示したＨＴＭＬ
ファイルに含まれるＡＳＣＩＩテキストである。テーブ
ル部６４は、上記に示したＨＴＭＬファイル内にコード
を用いて定義され、プリンタ名と管理者とプリンタの位
置とを含む、プリンタに関する情報を与える。
【００４３】上記に示したＨＴＭＬファイルに定義され
るハイパーリンク６６〜６８は、さまざまなプリンタサ
ポート機能に関する他のウェブページにウェブブラウザ
４０を方向付ける。例えば、ハイパーリンク６６「サー
ビス契約(Service Contract)」は、プリンタ補修契約に
関する情報のＵＲＬ「http://www.hpsc.com」にウェブ
ブラウザ４０を方向付ける。同様に、ハイパーリンク６
７、６８は、プリンタ消耗品を注文し、プリンタ装置の
製造業者から将来のプリンタ製品に関する情報を得るた
めのウェブページへのリンクを与える。
【００４４】プリンタに関するウェブページ１８は、マ
ニュアルや、部品リストや、その他の関連文献を含むこ
ともできる。このような文献は、装置１０、例えば非揮
発性メモリ内に記憶することも、あるいはウェブページ
１８に含まれるハイパーリンクを介して他の場所で参照
することもできる。このような文献は、更新済みマニュ
アルなどの動的情報と、装置１０用の新しい更新済みソ
フトウェアドライバルーチンを含む。
【００４５】図５は、装置１０、５０〜５２の装置ウェ
ブページにアクセスできるようにする大組織網８０を示
す。大組織網８０は、イントラネットと呼ぶことがで
き、さまざまなタイプの通信リンクによって接続された
ローカルエリアネットワークを含めさまざまな通信機構
を用いて実施することができる。
【００４６】大組織網８０に結合された１つまたは複数
の１組のコンピュータシステム９０〜９２は、装置１
０、５０〜５２の装置ウェブページにアクセスすること
ができる。コンピュータシステム９０〜９２が１つまた
は複数のさまざまな利用可能なウェブブラウザソフトウ
ェアを実行することも、あるいはコンピュータシステム
９０〜９２にウェブブラウザ機能を組み込むこともでき
る。
【００４７】１つのコンピュータシステム９０〜９２の
ユーザは、装置１０、５０〜５２のうちの所望の装置に
対応するＵＲＬを、対応するウェブブラウザアプリケー
ションに入力する。これに応答して、ＨＴＴＰクライア
ントとしての特定のウェブブラウザアプリケーション
は、所望のＵＲＬを指定するＨＴＴＰコマンドを大組織
網８０を介して転送する。ＨＴＴＰコマンドによって指
定された装置は、このコマンドに含まれるＵＲＬを認識
する。これに応答して、対象である装置は、その装置ウ
ェブページを定義するＨＴＭＬファイルを大組織網８０
を介して転送する。ＨＴＭＬファイルを転送することに
よって、コンピュータシステム９０〜９２のうちの発信
側ＨＴＴＰクライアントコンピュータシステムのＵＲＬ
が指定される。発信側ＨＴＴＰクライアントコンピュー
タシステムは、そのＵＲＬを認識し、装置ウェブページ
を受信し、次いでユーザに示す。
【００４８】図６は、ワールドワイドウェブ（ＷＷＷ）
１００との直接インターネット接続を通じた装置ウェブ
ページへのアクセスを示す。装置１０のウェブページ１
８は、ウェブブラウザ４０を含め、ＷＷＷ１００上の任
意のウェブクライアントからアクセスすることができ
る。
【００４９】また、通信システム１０２はＷＷＷ１００
とローカルエリアネットワーク１２０との間の通信ブリ
ッジとして働き、通信システム１０４はＷＷＷ１００と
家庭ベースネットワーク１３０との間の通信ブリッジと
して働く。したがって、ローカルエリアネットワーク１
２０または家庭ベースネットワーク１３０に結合された
他のＨＴＴＰクライアントは、装置１０８内の装置ウェ
ブページにアクセスすることも、あるいは装置１０６内
の装置ウェブページにアクセスすることも、あるいは装
置１０内の装置ウェブページにアクセスすることもでき
る。また、ＷＷＷ１００上のウェブブラウザ４０または
任意のＨＴＴＰクライアントは、装置１０６、１０８の
装置ウェブページにアクセスすることができる。
【００５０】本明細書で説明した組み込みウェブサーバ
機能によって、特定の装置ならびに数組の装置用の広く
アクセス可能なさまざまな装置問い合わせ機能および制
御機能が可能になる。例えば、Laundromatsチェーンの
各洗濯機にウェブページを組み込み、事務所のコンピュ
ータのオペレータが、補修を必要とする洗濯機を判定
し、それに応じてLaundromatsへの毎日の補修ルーティ
ングを計画することができる。

に与えたものであり、網羅的なものでも、あるいは開示
した厳密な実施形態に本発明を制限するためにものでも

し、次いで前記ＨＴＴＰコマンドに応答して前記装置ウ
ェブページを定義するＨＴＭＬファイルを生成する上記

ース機能を備え前記装置に関する１組の情報を含む装置
ウェブページを生成するプロセッサと、前記装置ウェブ
ページを記憶するメモリと、ウェブブラウザが通信経路
を介して前記装置ウェブページにアクセスできるように
前記通信経路を介した通信を可能にする入出力回路とを
備える装置。
【００５９】８． 前記プロセッサが前記入出力回路を
介してＨＴＴＰコマンドを受信し、次いで前記ＨＴＴＰ
コマンドに応答して前記装置ウェブページを定義するＨ
ＴＭＬファイルを生成する上記７に記載の装置。
【００６０】９． 前記ＨＴＴＰコマンドが前記装置に
対応するＵＲＬを指定する上記８に記載の装置。

【発明の効果】本発明では、装置ウェブページを与える
ウェブサーバを含む装置にウェブアクセス機能が組み込
まれる。ウェブサーバ機能は、通常、装置特有の機能を
実行する、既存のプロセッサ、メモリ、入出力回路な
ど、装置内の既存の回路を用いて実施され、それによっ
て装置用の専用ウェブサーバハードウェアに必要な余分
のコストおよび空間を回避することができる。また、装
置に組み込まれたウェブサーバ機能によって、インター
ネットのワールドワイドウェブ（ＷＷＷ）部分を含むさ
まざまな通信機構を介した装置ユーザインターフェース
アクセスが可能になる。よって、画面ベースのユーザイ
ンターフェース機構を装置に設けるコストは不要にな
り、外部コンピュータなしで装置ウェブサーバを構成す
ることができる。

    て前記装置用の前記ユーザインターフェース機能にアク
    セスできるような前記ウェブブラウザによって前記装置
    ウェブページへのアクセスを可能にするネットワークイ
    ンターフェースとを具備したことを特徴とするウェブア
    クセス機構。
