本発明のリグニン組成物は、2段階プロセスにおいて、超臨界、亜臨界、および近臨界水抽出を用いて製造された。140メッシュ以下の混合硬木チップからなる粒状リグノセルロース系バイオマスを水と混合して、スラリー(固形分約20重量%)を形成した。約170〜245℃の温度にスラリーを加熱して、次いで、水を液相中に維持するのに十分な圧力下にて前処理反応器にスラリーを約1〜120分間供給した。次いで、前処理されたスラリーをわずかな圧力(約10バール未満)下にて、または圧力をかけずに、約100℃未満の温度に冷却した。次いで、フィルタープレスを使用して、液体ストリームから、前処理された固形分を分離した。代替方法としては、遠心フィルタープレスを使用して固形分が分離される。次いで、前処理された固形分を水と混合してスラリーを形成し、スラリーを約150〜250℃の温度に加熱した。次いで、加水分解反応器内で約374〜600℃の超臨界水に、約0.05〜10秒間、圧力約230〜300バール下にてスラリーをさらした。加水分解反応器を出た後、加水分解スラリーを水で急冷し、次いでおよそ周囲温度および周囲圧力までフラッシュし、水を除去した。次いで、遠心デカンターを使用して、液体ストリームからリグニン固形分を分離し、空気乾燥させた。
燃焼および還元後に熱伝導率検出によって、リグニンを含有する乾燥組成物を分析して、灰、炭素、水素、および窒素のレベルを決定した。その結果を以下の表に示す:
リグニンについてNREL法(酸加水分解に続いて、http://www.nrel.gov/biomass/pdfs/42618.pdfに記載の標準NREL手順に従った重量測定プロトコルおよび熱分解分子線質量分析(py−MBMS)))を用いて、標準として硬木からのリグニンを使用して、固形分におけるリグニンのレベルを定量化した。その結果を以下の表に示す:

前記リグニンが、ASTM−D240およびD5865によって測定される、少なくとも約5,000BTU/lbの燃焼熱を有することを特徴とする、組成物。 - 請求項1に記載の組成物において、
前記リグニンが、約500ミクロン未満の平均粒径を有することを特徴とする、組成物。 - 請求項1に記載の組成物において、
前記リグニンが、約0.35g/cc未満のかさ密度を有することを特徴とする、組成物。 - 請求項1に記載の組成物において、
前記リグニンが、超臨界、亜臨界、または近臨界流体抽出またはその組み合わせを任意に用いて、リグノセルロース系バイオマスから処理されることを特徴とする、組成物。 - 請求項1に記載の組成物において、
有機溶媒を実質的に含有しないことを特徴とする、組成物。 - 請求項1に記載の組成物において、

シリンギル型モノリグノールとグアイアシル型モノリグノールの重量比が、熱分解分子線質量分析によって測定される、約2.0〜約3.0であることを特徴とする、組成物。 - リグニン;
