8.最終用途、化合物および応用
本発明に記載のスルホン化ブロックコポリマーは、種々の応用および最終用途に使用できる。選択的にスルホン化された内側ブロックを有するこのようなポリマーは、優れた湿潤強度、優れた水およびプロトン透過性、優れたメタノール耐性、容易なフィルムまたは膜形成、バリア特性、柔軟性および弾性の調節、調節可能な硬度、ならびに熱/酸化安定性の組み合わせが重要な応用において有用性が見いだされる。本発明の一実施形態において、本発明のスルホン化ブロックコポリマーは、電気化学的応用、例えば、燃料電池(セパレーター相)、燃料電池のためのプロトン交換膜、電極部品に使用するスルホン化ポリマーセメント中の金属含浸炭素粒子の分散液において使用され、燃料電池、水電解槽(電解液)、酸電池(電解液セパレーター)、スーパーキャパシタ(電解液)、金属回収プロセスのための分離セル(電解液バリア)、検出器(特に湿度を検出するため)などの応用を含む。本発明のスルホン化ブロックコポリマーは、脱塩膜、多孔膜への被覆剤、吸収剤、家庭用衛生物品、水ゲルおよび接着剤としても用いられる。さらに、本発明のブロックコポリマーは、膜または織物の一方から他方へ水を迅速に透過させる能力(例えば、着用者の皮膚の表面からの発汗による水分を膜または織物の外に逃すことを可能にすること、逆もまた同様)の結果として、快適性のレベルを提供すると同時に、膜、被覆された織物、および貼り合わせ布が種々の環境要素(風、雨、雪、化学薬剤、生物学的薬剤)からの保護のバリアを提供できる、防御用被服および通気性の良い織物への応用に使用できる。このような膜および織物から製造される完全密閉型スーツは、煙、化学物質流出、または種々の化学または生物学的薬剤への暴露の可能性がある場合に、緊急の場面に第1応答者を保護することができる。同様な必要性は、医療応用、特に外科手術において、バイオハザードへの暴露のリスクがある場合に生じる。これらのタイプの膜から作られる外科用手袋およびドレープは、医療環境において有用な場合の他の応用である。これらのタイプの膜から作られる物品は、米国特許第6,537,538号、第6,239,182号、第6,028,115号、第6,932,619号および第5,925,621号に記載されているように、抗菌性および/または抗ウイルス性および/または抗微生物性を有することができ、ここでは、ポリスチレンスルホナートがHIV(ヒト免疫不全ウイルス)およびHSV(単純ヘルペスウイルス)に対して阻害剤として作用することが指摘されている。家庭用衛生応用において、発汗からの水蒸気を透過させる一方で他の体液の漏れに対するバリアを提供し、湿潤環境においてもこの強度特性を維持する本発明の膜または織物は好都合であろう。このようなタイプのおむつおよび成人失禁用構造物の使用は現在の技術を超える改良となるであろう。
