図1aは、n1<n2であるような屈折率n1及びn2をそれぞれ有する第1の層110及び第2の層120を有する層の組み合わせ100を示したものである。第1の層内を伝播する光は多くの異なる入射角で界面130に入射し、透過角θtの範囲内の角度で第2の層内に屈折する。
一般に、特定の角度成分及び分布を有する光が臨界角θcよりも大きな1つ以上の角度で界面に入射する場合に全反射が起こる。
特定の実施形態では、粘弾性導光材は、(a)ペンダントビフェニル基を有するモノマー単位と、(b)アルキル(メタ)アクリレートモノマー単位とを含む米国特許出願第11/875194号(63656US002、デターマン(Determan)ら)に述べられるようなコポリマーを含む。
光学物品及び光学装置は、携帯電話機、携帯情報端末、MP3プレーヤー、デジタル写真フレーム、モニター、ラップトップコンピュータ、ミニプロジェクターなどのプロジェクター、GPSディスプレイ、テレビなどのディスプレイ装置上又は内部に使用することができる。光学物品は、ディスプレイ装置のディスプレイパネルを後方から照射するために使用される従来の導光材の代わりに使用することができる。例えば、本粘弾性導光材を使用して、1以上のほぼ直線状の光源又は点光源からの光を分配する中実又は中空の導光材に置き換えることができる。ディスプレイ装置は、ディスプレイの要素を粘弾性導光材に接着するために接着剤を使用することなく組み立てることができる。例示的なディスプレイ装置としては、LCD及びプラズマディスプレイパネルを有するものがある。例示的なディスプレイ装置については、米国特許出願公開第2008/232135 A1号(キンダー(Kinder)ら)及び米国特許第6,111,696号(アレン(Allen)ら)に述べられている。
(実施例1)
ガラス反応容器中に14.86部のPDMAジアミン1を、0.05部のポリアミン1、39.00部のトルエン及び21.00部の2−プロパノールとともに加えることによってエラストマーを含むシリコーン尿素PSAを調製した。この溶液に0.23部のH12MDIを加えた。混合物を室温で2時間攪拌したところ粘性を帯びた。これに25.00部のMQ樹脂−1を加えた。得られたシリコーン尿素PSAは、モル比にして1/1/2のPDMAジアミン1/ポリアミン1/H12MDIを含み、50重量%のMQ樹脂−1が配合されていた。
シリコーン尿素PSA層の一方を多層ポリマーミラーフィルム(スリー・エム社(3M Co.)より販売されるVikuiti(商標)ESR)で置き換えた以外は実施例1で述べたのと同様にして積層体を調製した。積層体の10.2cm×10.2cm(4×4インチ)の試料のアクリル系PSA層の端部に、積層体の幅にほぼ垂直で長さに平行となるようにしてLED光源を押し込んだ。このLEDを点灯した。光はアクリル系PSA層を通じて伝播し、LEDが層と接触している端部とは反対側の端部に沿って紙片を掲げることによって層から出射していることが観察された。光は積層体から他の方向には出射していなかった。
微小構造化形状を有するアクリル製抽出フィルムを入手した。このフィルムについては、米国特許出願公開第2005/0052750 A1号(キング(King)ら)に述べられている。アクリル製抽出フィルムの一方の主面には鋸刃状又は角錐プリズム状の形状が含まれていた。フィルムの反対側の主面には円筒状レンズが含まれていた。アクリル製抽出フィルムの屈折率は約1.52〜約1.56であった。
比較例
2枚のPETライナー(それぞれ厚さ50μm)の間に光学的に透明なアクリル系PSA(厚さ175μm)が配された転写テープ(スリー・エム社(3M Company)より販売される3M(商標)Optically Clear Laminating Adhesive 8187)を使用した。光学的に透明なアクリル系PSA層の屈折率は1.47であった。2層の8187 PSA(全体の厚さ=350μm)を用いて2枚のスライドガラスを互いにラミネートすることによって積層体を調製した。各スライドガラスはエスコ・プロダクツ社(Esco Products Inc.)より販売される75×38×1mmのNo.2956を用いた。
ハンドローラーを使用してシリコーン尿素PSA層を8187 PSA層にラミネートした。テープライナーを剥離し、8187 PSA層の新たに露出した面に第2のシリコーン尿素PSA層をラミネートした。各シリコーン尿素PSA層のPET剥離ライナーを剥離した。この3層PSAを用いて上記に述べた2枚のスライドガラスを互いにラミネートすることによって積層体を調製した。
2枚のPETライナー(それぞれ厚さ50μm)の間に光学的に透明なアクリル系PSA(厚さ50μm)が配された転写テープ(スリー・エム社(3M Company)より販売される3M(商標)Optically Clear Laminating Adhesive 8142)を使用した。このアクリル系8142 PSA層の屈折率は1.47であった。2層の8187 PSAを互いに積層した(全体の厚さ=350μm)。
2枚のPETライナー(それぞれ厚さ50μm)の間に光学的に透明なアクリル系PSA(厚さ25μm)が配された転写テープ(スリー・エム社(3M Company)より販売される3M(商標)Optically Clear Laminating Adhesive 8141)を使用した。このアクリル系8142 PSA層の屈折率は1.47であった。
(実施例6)
公称厚さ1mmでAbbe屈折計によって測定した屈折率が1.473である透明なアクリル系PSAを含む3枚のテープ(スリー・エム社(3M Company)より販売されるVHB(商標)Acrylic Tape 4910F)から3層の積層体を調製した。3層積層体を調製するにはハンドローラーを使用した。次いでこの3層積層体を、スリー・エム社(3M Company)より販売される3M(商標)Diamond Grade(商標)Reflective Sheeting(10.2cm×20.3cm(4インチ×8インチの領域))のフェース面(観測者側の表面)に、シートの前面が点灯するようにしてラミネートした。側方放射型LEDを一方の端部からコアPSAに押し込むと、光は20.3cm(8インチ)の3層積層体全体を通じて容易に通過し、出射することを視覚的に確認することができた。光はシートの白色の六角形のシールパターンに沿って光源と垂直な方向にも抽出された。
公称厚さ1mmでAbbe屈折計によって測定した屈折率が1.473である透明なアクリル系PSAを含む3枚のテープ(スリー・エム社(3M Company)より販売されるVHB(商標)Acrylic Tape 4910F)から3層の積層体を調製した。3層積層体を調製するにはハンドローラーを使用した。イソオクチルアクリレート/アクリルアミド(93/7重量/重量)溶媒ベースの接着剤に平均直径が約18ミクロンの中空のガラス球(ポッターズ・インダストリーズ社(Potters Industries Inc.)より販売されるSPHERICEL Grade 60P18)を2及び10pphで充填し、充填されたPSAのそれぞれを13ミクロン(0.5ミル)の乾燥厚さにコーティングした。2pphの中空ガラス球で充填し、手で塗り広げたPSAを幅7.6cm(3インチ)のストリップに切断した。これらのストリップを実施例2で述べたポリマーミラーフィルムに、ストリップが正方形をなすようにラミネートした。10pphの中空ガラス球で充填し、手で塗り広げたPSAをこの正方形を埋めるようにラミネートした。
重量比85/14/1のイソオクチルアクリレート/イソボルニルアクリレート/アクリル酸、0.8重量%の1,6−ヘキサンジオールジアクリレート、及び0.20重量%のIRGACURE 651(チバ・スペシャルティ社(Ciba Specialty))を含む接着剤を切り欠きバーナイフコーターを用いて実施例2で述べたポリマーミラーフィルム上にコーティングした。接着剤は、わずかにくさび状をなすように1250μm(50ミル)の湿潤厚さで一方の側面に、1000μm(40ミル)で他方の側面にコーティングした。この接着剤コーティングをシリコーン剥離ライナー(シー・ピー・フィルムズ社(CP Films)T10 0.05mm(2.0ミル)ポリエステル剥離ライナー)で覆い、低強度の紫外線ランプを用いて15分間硬化させた。この接着剤はAbbe屈折計で測定した屈折率が1.474であった。次いで半透明のグラフィックフィルムを接着層のポリマーミラーフィルムと反対側にラミネートした(20.3cm×25.4cm(8インチ×10インチ)の領域)。側方放射型LED回路を硬化したPSA層内に押し込んだところ、光は25.4cm(10インチ)のPSAの長さ全体を通じて容易に通過し、出射することを視覚的に確認することができた。光は光源と垂直な方向に半透明なグラフィック内にも抽出された。
(実施例9)
携帯電話機のキーパッドに光を抽出するように設計された柔軟なアクリル製導光材(厚さ0.5mm)を入手した。導光材の材料については米国特許出願公開第2007/0191506 A1号(ラジャン(Rajan))に述べられており、メタクリレートで官能化したアクリレートオリゴマー及びポリアルキレングリコールジメタクリレートを含むものである。実施例1で述べたシリコーン尿素PSA層を柔軟なアクリル製導光材材料の上面及び下面の両方に手でラミネートした。単純な側方放射型LEDの光を導光材に注入したところ、光はシリコーンPSAのクラッドを通じて抽出パターンに沿って抽出された。光はクラッドと導光材の間を誘導され、所定の抽出点以外の点ではクラッドから漏れなかった。
(実施例10)
90/10のイソオクチルアクリレート/アクリル酸、0.3重量%のヘキサンジオールジアクリレート、及び0.2重量%のIRGACURE 651光開始剤(チバ・スペシャルティ社(Ciba Specialty))を配合した接着剤組成物を、側方放射型発光ダイオード(LED)の2本のリボンが22.9cm(9インチ)の間隔で(両面接着剤により)取り付けられたミラーフィルム上にコーティングした。接着剤組成物は切り欠きバーナイフコーターを用いてコーティングし、シリコーン剥離ライナー(シー・ピー・フィルムズ社(CP Films)T10 0.05mm(2.0ミル)ポリエステル剥離ライナー)で覆った。低強度の紫外線ランプを用いて接着剤組成物を15分間硬化させた。接着剤組成物を1.78mm(70ミル)の湿潤厚さでコーティングしてLEDリボンを完全に封入した。この接着剤の屈折率は1.474であった(Abbe屈折計で測定した場合)。LEDに電流を供給できるように接着剤を接続点においてリボンから剥離した。透明な0.13mm(5ミル)のPETに印刷された抽出ドットパターンを有する抽出層をLEDリボンが埋め込まれた導光材(22.9cm×22.9cm(9インチ×9インチ))にラミネートした。次いで白色PETフィルムの拡散層を抽出層の上に置き、最後にビニール製のグラフィックフィルムをこの上に置いた(ビニールフィルムには画像が印刷されている)。封入された側方放射型LEDに通電したところ、光は22.9cm(9インチ)のPSAの長さ全体を通じて容易に通過し、ビニール製グラフィックフィルムを通じて抽出パターンから出射することを視覚的に確認することができた。

- 前記第1及び第2の基材がそれぞれ、ポリマーフィルム、金属、ガラス、セラミック、紙、布地、又はこれらの組み合わせのうちのいずれか1以上を含む、請求項29に記載の光学装置。
- 前記第1の基材が画像形成されたポリマーフィルムを含み、前記第2の基材がリフレクターを含む、請求項29に記載の光学装置。
- 前記第1の基材が画像形成されたポリマーフィルムを含み、前記第2の基材がリフレクターを含み、前記光学物品が前記粘弾性導光材の間に配置された更なる層を更に含み、前記更なる層が光透過性結合剤中に配置された粒子の層を含み、前記粒子がガラス又はポリマーを含む、請求項29に記載の光学装置。
- 前記光学物品が約90〜約100%の光透過率及び約0.01〜約5%未満のヘイズ値を有する、請求項29に記載の光学装置。
- 請求項1の光学物品を含む、サイン又はマーキング。
- ディスプレイパネル及び請求項1の光学物品を含む、ディスプレイ装置。
- 1以上のキー及び請求項1の光学物品を含む、キーパッドアセンブリ。
