Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to methods for thermomechanically treating metal alloys.
[0002] When thermomechanical processing ( ie, hot forming) of a metal alloy preform, such as an ingot, bar or blank, occurs, the surface of the preform cools faster than the inside of the preform. A specific example of this phenomenon can be observed when a metal alloy bar is heated and then forged using a radial forging press or a free forging press. During hot forging, the grain structure of the metal alloy is deformed due to the action of the dies. If the temperature of the metal alloy during deformation is lower than the temperature of recrystallization of the alloy, recrystallization of the alloy will not occur, which will lead to the appearance of a granular structure consisting of elongated unrecrystallized grains. If the temperature of the metal alloy during deformation, on the contrary, is higher than or equal to the temperature of recrystallization of the alloy, the alloy will recrystallize into an equiaxed structure.
[0003] Since, prior to hot forging, metal alloy preforms are generally heated to temperatures above the alloy recrystallization temperature, the interior of the preform, which does not cool as fast as the surface of the preform, usually has a fully recrystallized structure during hot forging. In this case, the surface of the preform may contain a mixture of unrecrystallized granules and fully recrystallized granules due to lower surface temperatures caused by relatively rapid cooling. A typical image of this phenomenon, shown in FIG. 1, illustrates the macrostructure of a radially forged bar of a Datalloy HP TM alloy — a super-austenitic stainless steel available from ATI Allvac, Monroe, UK, USA, characterized by the presence of unrecrystallized grains in the surface region of the bar. The presence of unrecrystallized grains in the surface region is undesirable, since they, for example, lead to an increase in the noise level during ultrasonic testing, reducing the benefits of such control. An ultrasound test may be necessary to check the condition of a metal alloy preform for use in critical applications. Secondly, unrecrystallized grains reduce the limit of multi-cycle fatigue.
[0004] Previous attempts to eliminate non-crystallized grains in the surface region of a thermomechanically processed metal alloy preform, such as, for example, a forged bar, have been unsatisfactory. For example, during processing in order to eliminate unrecrystallized grains of the surface region, excessive grain growth was observed in the inner part of the alloy preforms. Too large grains can also make ultrasonic testing of metal alloys difficult. Excessive grain growth in the interior can also reduce the fatigue limit of the alloy preform to unacceptable levels. In addition, attempts to eliminate unrecrystallized grains in the surface region of a thermomechanically processed alloy billet resulted in the release of harmful intermetallic phases, such as, for example, the sigma phase (σ phase). The presence of such precipitates may reduce corrosion resistance.
[0005] It would be advisable to develop methods for thermomechanical processing of metal alloy preforms so as to minimize or eliminate the presence of unrecrystallized granules in the surface region of the preform. It would also be advisable to develop methods for thermomechanical processing of metal alloy preforms in such a way as to ensure an equiaxed recrystallized grain structure in the cross section of the preform, while the cross section would practically contain no harmful intermetallic precipitates, and the average grain size of the equiaxed grain structure (grain structure) would be limited .
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] In accordance with one non-limiting aspect of the present invention, a method for processing a metal alloy comprises heating the metal alloy to a temperature in the operating temperature range. The operating temperature range is from the recrystallization temperature of the metal alloy to a temperature just below the initial melting temperature of the metal alloy. Then the metal alloy is treated at a temperature in the operating temperature range. After processing the metal alloy, the surface region of the metal alloy is heated to a temperature in the operating temperature range. The surface region of the metal alloy is maintained in the operating temperature range for a period of time sufficient to recrystallize the surface region of the metal alloy and to minimize grain growth in the inner region of the metal alloy. The metal alloy is cooled from the operating temperature range to such a temperature and with such a cooling rate that minimize grain growth in the metal alloy.
[0007] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, a non-limiting embodiment of a method for processing super-austenitic stainless steel includes heating the super-austenitic stainless steel to a temperature in the operating temperature range of the dissolution of the intermetallic phase. The temperature range for the dissolution of the intermetallic phase can range from the temperature of dissolution of the intermetallic phase to a temperature slightly below the initial melting temperature of super-austenitic stainless steel. In a non-limiting embodiment of the invention, the intermetallic phase is a sigma phase (σ phase) containing Fe-Cr-Ni intermetallic compounds. The superaustenitic stainless steel is kept in the temperature range of dissolution of the intermetallic phase for a time sufficient to dissolve the intermetallic phase and minimize grain growth in superaustenitic stainless steel. After that, the super-austenitic stainless steel is processed at a temperature in the operating temperature range from a temperature slightly above the apex temperature of the time-temperature-transformation curve for the intermetallic phase of the super-austenitic stainless steel to a temperature slightly below the initial melting temperature of the super-austenitic stainless steel. After processing, the surface region of the superaustenitic stainless steel is heated to a temperature in the annealing temperature range, while the annealing temperature range is from a temperature just above the apex temperature of the time-temperature-transformation curve for the intermetallic phase of the steel (alloy) to a temperature slightly below the initial melting temperature of the alloy . The temperature of the super-austenitic stainless steel does not decrease until it intersects with the time-temperature-transformation curve over a period of time from processing the alloy to heating at least the surface region of the alloy to a temperature in the annealing temperature range. The surface region of the super-austenitic stainless steel is maintained in the annealing temperature range for a period of time sufficient to recrystallize the surface region and minimize grain growth in the super-austenitic stainless steel. The alloy is cooled to a temperature and with such a cooling rate that prevents the formation of intermetallic precipitates of super-austenitic stainless steel and minimizes grain growth.

[0008] In accordance with another non-limiting aspect of the present invention, hot-pressed super-austenitic stainless steel contains in mass percent relative to the total mass of the alloy: up to 0.2 carbon, up to 20 manganese, from 0.1 to 1.0 silicon, from 14 , 0 to 28.0 chromium, from 15.0 to 38.0 nickel, from 2.0 to 9.0 molybdenum, from 0.1 to 3.0 copper, from 0.08 to 0.9 nitrogen, from 0 , 1 to 5.0 tungsten, from 0.5 to 5.0 cobalt, to 1.0 titanium, to 0.05 boron, to 0.05 phosphorus, to 0.05 sulfur, iron and random impurities. Super-austenitic stainless steel is characterized by an equiaxed recrystallized grain structure in the cross section of the alloy, and the average grain size is in the range from ASTM 00 to ASTM 3. The equiaxed recrystallized grain structure of the hot-pressed super-austenitic stainless steel contains almost no intermetallic sigma phase precipitates.

[0025] The presence of unrecrystallized surface grains in a hot-worked metal alloy bar or other preform can be eliminated by heat treatment by annealing, in which the alloy is heated to an annealing temperature higher than the temperature of recrystallization of the alloy, and held at this temperature until recrystallization is complete. However, in this treatment, superaustenitic stainless steels and some other austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to the formation of harmful intermetallic precipitates, such as sigma phase precipitates. The heating of large bars and other large rolled products of these alloys to the annealing temperature can, for example, lead to the release of harmful intermetallic compounds, in particular, in the central rolling area. Therefore, the annealing time and temperature should be chosen not only so that the grains of the surface region recrystallize, but also so that any intermetallic compounds are dissolved. For example, to ensure the dissolution of intermetallic compounds over the entire cross-section of a large bar, it may be necessary to withstand the bar at elevated temperatures for a considerable time. The diameter of the bar is a factor determining the minimum exposure time for the sufficient dissolution of harmful intermetallic compounds, and the minimum exposure time can be from one to four hours or more. In non-limiting embodiments of the invention, the minimum exposure time is 2 hours, more than 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours or 5 hours. Although it is possible to choose a temperature and a holding time so that both dissolution of intermetallic compounds and recrystallization of unrecrystallized grains of the surface region occur, holding at a dissolution temperature for a long time can also lead to grain growth to unacceptably large sizes. For example, the macrostructure of a radially forged bar of Datalloy HP TM super austenitic stainless steel, which was annealed at high temperature (1177 ° C (2150 ° F)) for a long time, is illustrated in FIG. 2. Too large grains, which are visible in FIG. 2, formed during heating, complicate the ultrasonic testing of the bar to confirm its compliance with the requirements of some commercial applications. In addition, grains that are too large reduce the fatigue limit of the metal alloy to unacceptably low levels.

[0027] FIG. 3, in accordance with one aspect of the present invention, schematically illustrates certain steps of a
[0028] After heating to a temperature in the operating temperature range, the metal alloy is treated 14 in the operating temperature range. In a non-limiting embodiment of the invention, processing a metal alloy in an operating temperature range leads to recrystallization of grains of at least the inner region of the metal alloy. Since the surface region of the metal alloy tends to be more rapidly cooled, for example, due to cooling due to contact with the working dies, grains in the surface region of the metal alloy can cool below the operating temperature range and not recrystallize during processing. In various non-limiting embodiments described herein, a “surface region” of a metal alloy or a metal alloy preform refers to a region from the surface to a depth of 0.0254 mm, 0.254 mm, 2.54 mm (0.001 inches, 0.01 inches, 0.1 inch) or 2.54 cm (1 inch) or more, inside the alloy or workpiece. It should be understood that the depth of the surface region at which recrystallization does not occur during
[0029] Since the surface region during processing may not recrystallize during processing, after processing the metal alloy and before any intentional cooling of the alloy, at least the surface region of the alloy is heated 18 to a temperature in the operating temperature range. Optionally, after processing the
[0030] After at least the surface region is heated 18 to a temperature in the operating temperature range, the temperature of the surface region is maintained at 20 in the operating temperature range for a time sufficient to allow recrystallization of the surface region of the metal alloy so that the entire cross section of the metal The alloy turned out to be crystallized. Applicable to superaustenitic stainless steels and austenitic stainless steels, the temperature of the superaustenitic stainless steel or austenitic stainless steel does not decrease until it intersects with the time-temperature-transformation curve during the time period from processing 14 of the alloy to
[0031] After holding the

[0033] ATI Datalloy 2® ESR alloy is available from ATI Allvac, Monroe, North Carolina, USA, and is generally described in International Patent Application No. WO 99/23267, which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Alloy ATI Datalloy 2® ESR has the following nominal chemical composition in mass percent relative to the total mass of the alloy: 0.03 carbon; 0.30 silicon; 15.1 manganese; 15.3 chrome; 2.1 molybdenum; 2.3 nickels; 0.4 nitrogen; and residual iron and random impurities. [0034] Super-austenitic stainless steels do not meet the classical definition of stainless steel since iron makes up less than 50 weight percent of super-austenitic stainless steel. Compared to traditional austenitic stainless steels, super austenitic stainless steels exhibit higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in halide containing media.

[0037] In some non-limiting embodiments of the methods of the present invention and again according to FIG. 3, heating the
[0038] In some non-limiting embodiments of the methods of the present invention and again according to FIG. 3, exposure of the surface region of the
[0039] In addition, in non-limiting embodiments of the proposed methods applicable to super austenitic stainless steels and austenitic stainless steels, the alloy is preferably treated 14, the surface region is heated 18 and the

[0040] In some non-limiting embodiments of the methods of the present invention, in which the metal alloy is one of alloys of super austenitic stainless steel and austenitic stainless steel,
[0041] Without being limited by any particular theory, it is believed that intermetallic precipitates are mainly formed in superaustenitic stainless steels and austenitic stainless steels, since the kinetics of precipitation is fast enough so that precipitation can occur in the alloy if any part of the alloy can temperature decreases to a temperature representing or below the bending temperature or the apex of the isothermal transformation curve of the alloy for precipitating a particular intermetallic phase. Figure 4 presents a typical curve of
[0042] When the methods of the present invention are applied to super austenitic stainless steels and austenitic stainless steels, the cooling

[0044] According to FIGS. 5-7 and in accordance with an aspect of the present invention, a non-limiting embodiment of a
[0046] The superaustenitic stainless steel is maintained 53 in the temperature range of dissolution of the precipitates of the intermetallic phase for a time sufficient to dissolve the precipitates of the intermetallic phase and to minimize grain growth in superaustenitic stainless steel. In non-limiting embodiments of the invention, superaustenitic stainless steel or austenitic stainless steel can be maintained in the temperature range of dissolution of precipitates of the intermetallic phase over a period of time ranging from 1 minute to 2 hours, from 5 minutes to 60 minutes, or from 10 minutes to 30 minutes. It should be understood that the minimum time during which it is necessary to withstand 53 superaustenitic stainless steel or austenitic stainless steel in the temperature range of dissolution of precipitates of the intermetallic phase to dissolve precipitates of the intermetallic phase depends on various factors, including, for example, the composition of the alloy, the thickness of the workpiece, and the particular used temperature in the temperature range of dissolution of precipitates of the intermetallic phase. It is understood that one skilled in the art, after reviewing the description of the present invention, will be able to determine the minimum time required to dissolve the intermetallic phase without conducting unnecessary experiments.
[0047] After the holding
[0048] Since the surface region may not recrystallize during
[0049] Optionally, after processing 54 superaustenitic stainless steel, superaustenitic stainless steel 56 can be transferred to a heating device. In various non-limiting embodiments of the invention, the heating device includes at least one furnace device, a flame heating device, an induction heating device, or any other suitable heating device known to one skilled in the art. For example, a heating device may be in the workplace, or dies, rolls, or any other device for hot working in the workplace may be heated to minimize unexpected cooling of the surface region of the metal alloy in contact with them.
[0051] In a non-limiting embodiment, according to FIGS. 5-7, the surface region of the super austenitic stainless steel is held 60 in the annealing temperature range for a period of time sufficient to recrystallize the surface region of the super austenitic stainless steel and dissolve any precipitates of harmful intermetallic phases that could appear in the surface region, but which at the same time does not lead to excessive grain growth in the alloy.
[0052] Again, according to FIGS. 5-7, after holding the

[0053] Another aspect of the present invention relates to certain metal alloy rolling products. Some metal alloy rolling products of the present invention comprise or consist of a metal alloy that has been processed by any of the methods of the present invention and which has not been processed to remove an unrecrystallized surface region by stripping or any other mechanical method of removing material. In some non-limiting embodiments of the invention, the metal alloy rolling product of the present invention comprises or consists of austenitic stainless steel or super austenitic stainless steel that has been processed by any of the methods of the present invention. [0054] In accordance with some non-limiting embodiments of the invention, the metal alloy rolling product of the present invention comprises or consists of superaustenic stainless steel or austenitic stainless steel having an equiaxed recrystallized grain structure over the entire cross section of the rolling product, with an average grain size of the alloy represents a range of grain sizes according to ASTM from 00 to 3 or from 00 to 2, or from 00 to 1, or from 3 to 4, or a grain size according to ASTM more 4 it, in accordance with ASTM E112-12 specifications. In a non-limiting embodiment, the equiaxed recrystallized grain structure of the alloy is substantially free of precipitates of the intermetallic sigma phase.
316L (UNS S31603).[0055] Examples of metal alloys that may be included in the rolling product of a metal alloy in accordance with this invention include, but are not limited to, any of: ATI Datalloy HP ™ alloy (UNS not defined); ATI Datalloy 2® ESR alloy (UNS undefined); Alloy 25-6HN (UNS N08367); Alloy 600 (UNS N06600); Alloy ®G-2 TM (UNS N06975); Alloy 625 (UNS N06625); Alloy 800 (UNS N08800); alloy 800H (UNS N08810); alloy 800AT (UNS N08811); alloy 825 (UNS N08825); Alloy G3 (UNS N06985); Alloy 2535 (UNS N08535); Alloy 2550 (UNS N06255); and alloy 316L (UNS S31603).
[0056] With respect to various aspects of the present invention, it is contemplated that the grain size of the metal alloy bars or other metal alloy rolling products in accordance with various non-limiting embodiments of the methods of the present invention can be adjusted by changing the temperatures used in the various steps. For example, and without limitation, the grain size of the central region of the bar or other form of the metal alloy can be reduced by lowering the temperature at which the metal alloy is processed in this method. One of the possible ways to reduce the grain size involves heating the processed form of the metal alloy to a temperature high enough to dissolve any harmful intermetallic precipitates formed during the previous processing steps. For example, in the case of the Datalloy HP ™ alloy, the alloy can be heated to a temperature of about 1149 ° C (2100 ° F), which exceeds the dissolution temperature of the sigma phase of the alloy. The dissolution temperature of the sigma phase of super austenitic stainless steels that can be processed according to the methods described herein is typically in the range of 871 ° C (1600 ° F) to 982 ° C (1800 ° F). The alloy can then be immediately cooled to a working temperature of, for example, 1121 ° C (2050 ° F) for the Datalloy HP TM alloy, without allowing the temperature to fall below the apex of the ECP diagram for the sigma phase. The alloy can be subjected to hot pressure treatment, for example, by radial forging, to the required diameter, followed by immediate transfer to the furnace to ensure recrystallization of unrecrystallized surface grains, without allowing the treatment time between the dissolution temperature and the temperature of the apex of the ECP to exceed the time to the apex of ECP, or not allowing the temperature to fall below the apex of the ECP diagram for the sigma phase during this period, or by making the temperature super-austenitic stainless steel did not decrease until the intersection of the time-temperature-transformation curve over a period of time from processing the alloy to heating at least the surface region of the alloy to a temperature in the annealing temperature range. After the recrystallization step, the alloy can be cooled to such a temperature and with a cooling rate that prevents the formation of harmful intermetallic precipitates in the alloy. A sufficiently high cooling rate can be achieved, for example, by quenching the alloy in water.
[0057] The following examples are intended to further describe some non-limiting embodiments of the invention and do not limit the scope of the present invention. For specialists in the art it is obvious that there may be variations of the following examples, which are included in the scope of this invention, which is defined solely by the claims.
1.[0058] A bar of Datalloy HP ™ alloy, available from ATI Allvac, was obtained with a diameter of 50.8 cm (20 inches) using a traditional melting method that combines the steps of argon-oxygen decarburization and electroslag remelting. The ingot had the following specific chemical composition in mass percent relative to the total mass of the alloy: 0.007 carbon; 4.38 manganese; 0.015 phosphorus; less than 0,0003 sulfur; 0.272 silicon; 21.7 chromium; 30.11 nickels; 5.23 molybdenum; 1.17 copper; residual iron and uncertain random impurities. The ingot was homogenized at 1204 ° C (2200 ° F) and planted and pulled with repeated reheating in open dies to a blank diameter of 31.75 cm (12.5 inches). The forged blank was further processed using the following steps, which are shown in FIG.6. A blank of 31.75 cm (12.5 inches) in diameter was heated (see, for example, FIG. 5, step 52) to a dissolution temperature of the precipitates of the intermetallic phase of 1204 ° C (2200 ° F), which is a temperature in the range of dissolution temperatures precipitates of the intermetallic phase according to the present invention, and kept 53 at this temperature for more than 2 hours to dissolve any precipitates of the intermetallic sigma phase. The pig was cooled to a temperature of 1149 ° C (2100 ° F), which is the temperature in the operating temperature range according to the present invention, and then subjected to radial forging (54) to a pig with a diameter of 24.99 cm (9.84 inches). The blank was immediately transferred (56) to the furnace at a temperature of 1149 ° C (2100 ° F), which is the temperature in the annealing temperature range for this alloy according to the present invention, and at least the surface region of the alloy was heated (58) at the annealing temperature. The pig was kept in the furnace for 20 minutes so as to maintain (60) the temperature of the surface region in the annealing temperature range for a period of time sufficient to recrystallize the surface region and dissolve any harmful precipitates of the intermetallic phase in the surface region without excessive grain growth in the alloy. The blank was cooled (62) by quenching in water at room temperature. The resulting macrostructure in cross section of the disc is shown in FIG. 8. The macrostructure shown in FIG. 8 does not contain signs of unrecrystallized grains in the region of the outer boundary ( i.e., in the surface region) of the forged bar. ASTM 3.[0059] An ingot of Datalloy HP ™ alloy, available from ATI Allvac, having a diameter of 50.8 cm (20 inches) was prepared using a traditional melting method that combines the steps of argon-oxygen decarburization and electroslag remelting. The ingot had the following specific chemical composition in mass percent relative to the total mass of the alloy: 0.006 carbon; 4.39 manganese; 0.015 phosphorus; 0.0004 sulfur; 0.272 silicon; 21.65 chromium; 30.01 nickel; 5.24 molybdenum; 1.17 copper; residual iron and uncertain random impurities. The ingot was homogenized at 1204 ° C (2200 ° F) and planted and pulled with repeated reheating in open dies to a blank diameter of 31.75 cm (12.5 inches). The blank was subjected to the following processing steps, which are shown in FIG.7. A blank of 31.75 cm (12.5 inches) in diameter was heated (see, for example, FIG. 5, step 52) to a temperature of 1149 ° C (2100 ° F), which is the temperature in the temperature range of the dissolution of the precipitates of the intermetallic phase according to the present invention , and kept (53) at this temperature for more than 2 hours to dissolve any precipitates of the intermetallic sigma phase. The pig was cooled to 1121 ° C (2050 ° F), which is the temperature in the operating temperature range of the present invention, and then radially forged (54) to a pig with a diameter of 24.99 cm (9.84 inches). The blank was immediately transferred (56) to the furnace at a temperature of 1121 ° C (2050 ° F), which is the temperature in the annealing temperature range for this alloy according to the present invention, and at least the surface region of the alloy was heated (58) at the annealing temperature. The blank was kept in the furnace for 45 minutes so as to maintain (60) the temperature of the surface region in the annealing temperature range for a period of time sufficient to recrystallize the surface region and dissolve any harmful precipitates of the intermetallic phase in the surface region without excessive grain growth in the alloy. The blank was cooled (62) by quenching in water at room temperature. The resulting macrostructure in the cross section of the disc is shown in FIG. 9. The macrostructure shown in FIG. 9 does not contain signs of unrecrystallized grains in the region of the outer boundary ( i.e., in the surface region) of the forged bar. The ASTM grain size for equiaxed grain is ASTM 3.

ASTM 3.[0060] An ATI Allvac AL-6XN® austenitic stainless steel ingot (UNS N08367) with a diameter of 50.8 cm (20 inches) was prepared using the traditional melting method, which combines the steps of argon-oxygen decarburization and electroslag remelting. The ingot had the following specific chemical composition in mass percent relative to the total mass of the alloy: 0.02 carbon; 0.30 manganese; 0.020 phosphorus; 0.001 sulfur; 0.35 silicon; 21.8 chromium; 25.3 nickels; 6.7 molybdenum; 0.24 nitrogen; 0.2 copper; residual iron and uncertain random impurities. The following processing steps will be better understood in conjunction with FIG.6. The ingot was heated (52) to a temperature of 1260 ° C (2300 ° F), which is a temperature in the temperature range of dissolution of the precipitates of the intermetallic phase according to the present invention, and kept (53) at this temperature for 60 minutes to dissolve any precipitates of the intermetallic sigma phase. The ingot was cooled to a temperature of 1204 ° C (2200 ° F), which is a temperature in the operating temperature range, and then hot rolled (54) to a plate thickness of 2.54 cm (1 inch). The plate was immediately transferred (56) to the annealing furnace at 1121.11 ° C (2050 ° F) and at least the surface region of the plate was heated (58) to the annealing temperature. The annealing temperature is in the range of annealing temperatures from a temperature just above the apex temperature of the time-temperature-transformation curve for precipitates of the intermetallic sigma phase of austenitic stainless steel to a temperature slightly below the initial melting temperature of austenitic stainless steel. The plate is not cooled to the intersection temperature of the time-temperature-transformation diagram for the sigma phase during the hot rolling stages (54) and transfer (56). The surface region of the alloy is maintained (60) in the annealing temperature range for 15 minutes, which is sufficient to recrystallize the surface region and dissolve any harmful precipitates of the intermetallic phase without excessive grain growth in the surface region of the alloy. Then, the alloy was cooled (62) by quenching in water, which provides a cooling rate sufficient to prevent the formation of precipitates of the intermetallic sigma phase in the alloy. The macrostructure does not contain signs of unrecrystallized grains in the surface region of the rolled plate. The ASTM grain size for equiaxed grain is ASTM 3.
