Abstract

미디어-온-디맨드 시스템과 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템내의 미디어에 구성가능 액세스를 제공하는 방법과 머신 판독가능 저장 장치{USER CONTROLLED MULTI-DEVICE MEDIA-ON-DEMAND SYSTEM}
본 발명은 멀티미디어 전송 및 제어 분야에 관한 것이다. 보다 구체적으로는 본 발명은 액세스 위치에 관계없이 디지털 미디어를 동적으로 제어하고 참조하는(dynamically controlling and referencing) 방법 및 장치에 관한 것이다.
유저(user)들은 다양한 미디어-온-디맨드(media-on-demand(MOD)) 시스템으로부터 전달된 대량의 디지털 데이터를 가지는 데에 점점 더 익숙해지고 있다. 협대역 통신망(narrowband networks)으로부터 광대역 통신망(broadband networks)으로의 계속되는 발전은 유선 수단에 의해서만이 아니라 무선 수단에 의해서도 광대역 데이터의 전송을 촉진시킴으로써 디지털 데이터를 전달하는 데에 대하여 점점 더 많은 요구를 가속화시켰다. 예를 들면, 무수한 텍스트, 오디오 및 비디오 컨텐츠를 가지며 어디서든지 이용가능성을 가지는 인터넷은 수많은 유선 및 무선 수단을 통하여 어디서부터라도 실제적으로 액세스가 가능한 풍부한 정보를 소비자에게 제공할 수 있다. 디지털 데이터로의 액세스를 제공하는 통신망이 발전함에 따라, 통신망은 대역폭을 요구하는 스트리밍 오디오 및 비디오 컨텐츠(bandwidth demanding streaming audio and video content)를 소비자에게 보다 효율적으로 분산시키고 서비스(service)하는 자신의 능력을 향상시킨다.
다양한 형태의 무선 액세스 방법론이 만들어져서 소비자에게 다양한 광대역 통신망으로의 액세스를 제공하였다. 예를 들면, 케이블 서비스 운영자에 의해서 제공된 케이블 모뎀 서비스는 케이블 신호를 가입자가 있는 곳으로 운반하는 동일한 동축 케이블(coaxial cable)을 통한 근거리 통신망(LAN) 타입 액세스 속도를 제공할 수 있다. 이들 시스템에서 이용되는 케이블 모뎀은 통신망이 대칭성 또는 비대칭성 토폴로지(a symmetrical or an asymmetrical topology)를 이용하도록 구성되었는지 여부에 따라서 전송 속도를 초당 수 메가비트까지 지원할 수 있다. 이들 시스템은 협대역 시스템보다 훨씬 빠른데, 이는 전형적으로 28Kbps에서 56Kbps에 이르는 범위의 전송 속도를 제공할 수 있다. 디지털 가입자 선로(Digital Subscriber Loop(DSL)) 기술은 비록 전통적인 일반 전화통화 서비스(Plain Old Telephone Service(POTS)) 구리 트위스트 페어 라인(copper twisted pair lines)을 통해서이기는 하지만 가입자에게 광대역 액세스 또한 제공할 수 있다. 오늘날의 케이블 모뎀만큼 빠르지는 않지만, DSL 모뎀이 근간이되는 통신망 수단에 따라 2Mbps에 근접하는 다운스트림 속도(downstream speed) 및 512Kbps에 근접하는 업스트림 속도(upstream speed)를 제공할 것이 요구된다.
소비자에게 광대역 무선 액세스를 제공하는 데에 다수의 무선 액세스 기술이 이용되었다. 예를 들면, Brampton, P.O. 소재의 Nortel Network Corporation에 의해서 제작된 리유니온 광대역 무선 액세스(Reunion Broadband Wireless Access(BWA))는 24GHz에서 38GHz까지의 주파수 범위에서 동작하는 디지털 포인트 대 멀티포인트(point-to-multipoint) 기술을 제공한다. 추가적으로, 다양한 작은 형태 요소 데이터 디바이스(small form factor data devices)간의 짧은 범위의 무선 링크를 제공하는 무선 기술인 BluetoothTM는 721Kbps의 속도를 가지고 2.45GHz에서 동작할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 고정 무선 루프(Fixed Wireless Loop), 무선 로컬 루프(Wireless Local Loop), 로컬 멀티포인트 분산 시스템(Local Multipoint Distribution System(LMDS)) 및 멀티채널 멀티포인트 분산 시스템(Multichannel Multipoint Distribution System(MMDS))과 같은 다양한 다른 기술이 가입자에게 광대역 액세스를 제공하는 데에 이용되었다.
협대역 액세스 및 서비스로부터 광대역 액세스 및 서비스로의 성장 및 점차적인 전환은 다운로딩 시간을 감소시키고, 결과적으로 유저의 디지털 미디어 통신망(digital media network)에 액세스하고자 하는 의욕을 증가시킴으로써 디지털 미디어로의 유저 액세스를 용이하게 하였다. 통신망 액세스에 있어서의 이러한 성장 및 가입자의 의욕은 가입자 단말기에 다양한 광대역 서비스로의 액세스를 제공하고자 하는 필요성을 자극하였다. 전형적인 가입자 액세스 디바이스는 PC, TV, 셋톱 박스, 휴대용 컴퓨터, 무선 LAN 서비스 및 나중에 재생하여 보기 위해서 인터넷으로부터 디지털 미디어 컨텐츠를 다운로딩할 자격을 가지는 오디오 서비스를 포함한다.
결과적으로, 디지털 미디어의 전송에 대한 유저/가입자 제어의 새로운 문제점이 MOD 서비스의 발전, 광대역 액세스 및 각기 자신의 자격 및 액세스 특성을 지니는 수많은 액세스 디바이스의 존재의 발전으로부터 생긴다. 현재의 시스템은 뷰잉 세션에서(in a viewing session) 제 1 액세스 디바이스상의 특정한 디지털 미디어에 액세스하고, 이어서 제 2 액세스 디바이스로부터 동일한 디지털 미디어를 허여함으로써 뷰잉 세션을 계속하는 기능이 부족하다. 예를 들면, 현재의 시스템에서, 유저가 집에서 TV를 통하여 전달된 영화를 보다가, 영화의 전달을 종료시키고 나중에 그 영화의 전달을 재개할 수 없다. 추가적으로, 현재의 시스템은 나중에 상이한 액세스 디바이스, 예를 들면 PC를 통하여 영화의 전달을 재개하는 것을 가능하게 하지 않는다. 마지막으로, 현재의 시스템은 원래의 액세스가 개시된 위치, 즉 집으로부터 상이한 위치에 위치한 액세스 디바이스로의 영화의 전달의 재개를 가능하게 하지 않는다. 따라서, 현재의 MOD 시스템에는 제한 및 불융통성(inflexibility)이 존재하므로, 보다 MOD 시스템내의 디지털 미디어로의 구성가능 액세스(configurable access)를 제공하는 효율적이며 유연한 시스템 및 방법을 제공할 필요성이 존재한다.

본 발명의 다른 실시예는 유저가 특정 시간에 공항에 도착하여야 할 긴급 상황 때문에 집에서 세션을 종료시킬 것을 잊어버리는 본 예의 환경에서 발생할 수 있다. 일단 유저가 공항으로부터 클라이언트 디바이스(620-1)를 이용하여 ISP(300)를 액세스하면, 유저는 클라이언트 디바이스(615-1)의 진행과 더불어 IMA(600)가 세션을 종료할 것을 요청할 수 있다. 이어서, 유저는 IMA(600)가 클라이언트 디바이스(620-1)상에서 비디오 프리젠테이션 세션을 지속할 것을 요청할 수 있다.
특히, 유저가 집에서 세션을 종료할 것을 잊어버렸기 때문에 이전에 어떠한 북마크도 존재하지 않았으므로, 유저에게는 프리젠테이션 길이의 시간에 비례할 수 있는 타임 코드를 추정할 선택 사항이 주어질 수 있다. 예를 들면, 비디오 프리젠테이션이 2.5시간(2시간:30분:00초)의 길이라면, 타임 코드 1:30:23의 기입은 1시간, 30분, 23초의 타임 스탬프(time stamp)에 해당할 것이다. 따라서, 유저가 비디오 프리젠테이션의 최후의 시간을 보기를 원한다면, 유저는 01:30:00을 타임 코드로 기입할 것이다. 이 타임 코드를 실제 타임 코드와 구별하기 위하여, 별표(*)가 타임 코드 다음에 위치시켜 가상적인 것임을 나타낼 수 있다.

    상기 미디어를 제 1 통신 링크(a first communications link)를 통하여 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스(a first client device)에 전달하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어 내의 위치를 명시하는 북마크(a bookmark)를 기록하는 단계와,

    상기 미디어를 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는 데에 있어 MODS가 이용가능하지 않다고 판정되는 경우에, 상기 미디어를 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는 MODS를 선택하는 단계 - 상기 선택된 MODS는 표준 포맷의 상기 미디어를 포함함-와,
    상기 표준 포맷의 상기 미디어를 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 변환하는 단계
    를 포함하는 미디어로의 액세스 제공 방법.
  10. 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템(a user-controlled media-on-demand system)에 있어서,
    미디어를 클라이언트 디바이스 세션(client device sessions)에 전달하는 미디어-온-디맨드 서버(MODS)와,
    상기 MODS와 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스 세션사이의 제 1 통신 링크와,
    상기 MODS와 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션사이의 제 2 통신 링크와,
    상기 전달된 미디어 내의 위치를 명시하는 상기 MODS 내의 북마크를 포함하되,
    상기 MODS는 미디어를 상기 제 1 통신 링크를 통하여 상기 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하고,
    상기 MODS는 상기 미디어를 상기 북마크에 의해서 명시된 상기 위치에서 개시하는 상기 제 2 통신 링크를 통하여 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달하는 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
    을 포함하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  11. 제 10 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션은 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 내에 각기 존재하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  12. 제 10 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션은 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스 내에(in a single client device) 존재하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  13. 제 11 항에 있어서,
    상기 MODS와 상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스사이에 위치한 중간 서버를 더 포함하되,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 MODS로부터 상기 전달된 미디어를 수신하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 클라이언트 디바이스 각각에 대한 디바이스 특성을 식별하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 전달된 미디어를 각각의 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 상기 식별된 디바이스 특성과 양립할 수 있는 미디어 포맷으로 변환하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 변환된 미디어를 상기 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  14. 제 12 항에 있어서,
    상기 MODS와 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스사이에 위치한 중간 서버를 더포함하되,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 MODS로부터 상기 전달된 미디어를 수신하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 디바이스 특성을 식별하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 전달된 미디어를 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 상기 식별된 디바이스 특성과 양립할 수 있는 미디어 포맷으로 변환하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 변환된 미디어를 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  15. 제 10 항에 있어서,
    다수의 미디어-온-디맨드 서버- 상기 다수의 미디어-온-디맨드 서버내의 상기 MODS는 각기 미디어를 특정한 디바이스 특성과 양립할 수 있는 적어도 하나의 포맷으로 저장함-와,
    중간 서버를 포함하되,
    상기 중간 서버는 클라이언트 디바이스 세션을 포함하는 클라이언트 디바이스의 디바이스 특성을 식별하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 미디어를 상기 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는, 상기 다수의 미디어-온-디맨드 서버 내의 MODS를 선택하며,
    상기 선택된 MODS는 상기 미디어를 상기 식별된 디바이스 특성과 양립할 수있는 포맷으로 저장하며,
    상기 선택된 MODS는 상기 미디어를 상기 식별된 디바이스 특성과 양립할 수 있는 상기 포맷으로 상기 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  16. 제 15 항에 있어서,
    미디어를 포준 포맷으로 저장하는 백업 MODS(a backup MODS)와,
    상기 중간 서버 내의 변환 필터(a conversion filter)를 더 포함하되,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 다수의 미디어-온-디맨드 서버내의 MODS가 상기 미디어를 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 데에 이용가능한지 여부를 판정하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 어떠한 MODS도 미디어를 상기 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 데에 이용가능하지 않다고 판정되는 경우에 상기 백업 MODS를 선택하며,
    상기 백업 MODS는 상기 미디어를 상기 중간 서버에 상기 표준 포맷으로 전달하며,
    상기 중간 서버는 상기 미디어를 상기 변환 필터 내에서 상기 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 변환하는 유저-제어 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템.
  17. 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템 내에 미디어에의 구성가능 액세스를 제공하는 방법에 있어서,
    상기 미디어를 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어의 상기 전달을 인터럽트하는 단계와,
    상기 인터럽트가 발생하는 경우에 상기 미디어 내의 위치를 명시하는 북마크를 기록하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어의 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스로의 전달을 재개하는 단계 - 상기 재개된 전달은 상기 기록된 북마크에 의해서 미디어 내에 명시된 위치에서 재개함-
    를 포함하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  18. 제 17 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스의 디바이스 타입(a device type)을 식별하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어를 상기 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 상기 식별된 디바이스 타입과 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어를 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 상기 식별된 디바이스 타입과 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계
    를 포함하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  19. 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템 내의 미디어에의 구성가능 액세스를 제공하는 다수의 코드 부분(a plurality of code sections)을 가지는 컴퓨터 프로그램이 저장된 머신 판독가능 저장 장치(a machine readable storage)에 있어서,
    상기 코드 부분은 머신이
    상기 미디어를 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어의 상기 전달을 인터럽트하는 단계와,
    상기 인터럽트가 발생한 상기 미디어 내의 위치를 명시하는 북마크를 기록하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어의 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에의 전달을 재개하는 단계- 상기 재개된 전달은 상기 기록된 북마크에 의해서 상기 미디어내의 명시된 위치에서 개시함-
    를 수행하도록 하여 상기 머신에 의해서 실행가능한 머신 판독가능 저장 장치.
  20. 제 19 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 각각의 디바이스 타입을 식별하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어를 상기 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 제1 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 상기 식별된 디바이스 타입과 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어를 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 상기 식별된 디바이스 타입과 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계
    를 더 포함하는 머신 판독가능 저장 장치.
  21. 미디어-온-디맨드 시스템내의 미디어에의 구성가능 액세스를 제공하는 방법에 있어서,
    상기 미디어를 제 1 통신 링크를 통하여 제 1 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어내의 위치를 명시하는 북마크를 기록하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어를 제 2 통신 링크를 통하여 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달하는 단계- 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션으로의 상기 전달은 상기 기록된 북마크에 의해서 명시된 상기 위치에서 개시함-
    를 포함하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  22. 제 21 항에 있어서,
    상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션은 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스 내에 존재하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  23. 제 22 항에 있어서,
    상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스에 대한 디바이스 특성을 식별하는 단계와,
    상기 미디어를 상기 각기 확립된 제 1 및 제 2 통신 링크를 통하여 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스 내의 상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달하는 단계- 상기 미디어는 상기 식별된 디바이스 특성에 대한 적당한 포맷으로 전달됨-
    를 더 포함하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  24. 제 22 항에 있어서,
    상기 미디어는 미디어-온-디맨드 서버(MODS)내에 저장되며, 상기 제 1 및 상기 제 2 통신 링크 각각을 통하여 상기 제 1 및 상기 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달되는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  25. 제 24 항에 있어서,
    상기 미디어를 상기 제 1 및 제 2 통신 링크를 통하여 상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달하는 상기 단계는
    상기 MODS로부터 상기 미디어를 중간 서버내에 수신하는 단계와,
    상기 중간 서버 내에서, 상기 미디어를 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스의 상기 식별된 디바이스 특성과 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 변환하는 단계와,
    상기 변환된 미디어를 상기 제 1 및 제 2 통신 링크 각각을 통하여 상기 제 1 및 제 2 클라이언트 디바이스 세션에 전달하는 단계
    를 포함하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  26. 제 24 항에 있어서,
    상기 미디어를 다수의 미디어-온-디맨드 서버들 중 선택된 하나에 저장하는 단계 - 상기 다수의 미디어-온-디맨드 서버들 중 각각의 MODS는 상기 미디어를 선택된 디바이스 타입과 양립할 수 있는 적어도 하나의 포맷으로 저장함 -와,
    상기 미디어를 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스에 전달하는 MODS를 선택하는 단계 - 상기 선택된 MODS는 여기에 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스와 양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 저장된 상기 미디어를 가짐 -와,
    상기 선택된 MODS로부터 상기 미디어를 상기 단일의 클라이언트 디바이스와양립할 수 있는 포맷으로 전달하는 단계
    를 더 포함하는 구성가능 액세스 제공 방법.
  27. 제 26 항에 있어서,
    상기 선택하는 단계는
