Claims (8)

  1. 長手方向に離間された排気ポート(226)および吸気ポート(224)を有する少なくとも1つのシリンダ(220)と、前記シリンダのボア内に互いに向かい合って配置される一対のピストン(280)とを含み、燃焼室が前記ピストンの対向する端面(282)の間に画定された内燃機関であって
    前記ピストンの各々の端面(282)が、前記端面の周縁部を画定する円周方向領域(284)と周縁部内のボウル(286)とを有し、前記ボウルが、前記円周方向接触領域を含む平面から前記ピストンの内部に向かって内方へ湾曲する第1の部分(290)と、前記ピストンの内部から前記円周方向接触領域を含む平面を通って外に向かって湾曲する第2の部分(292)とを有する凹面(288)を画定する、内燃機関。
  2. 前記対向するピストンは、前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に、細長い楕円形状を有する燃焼室(300)が前記ボウルの間に画定されように、前記ボア内に方向付けられ、少なくとも1つの噴射器ポート(265)が、前記燃焼室の長軸(302)上の位置において前記シリンダに設けられる、請求項に記載の内燃機関。
  3. 各端面が、前記周縁部内に、前記円周方向接触領域を含む前記平面から外に向かって湾曲する、凸面(295)をさらに含み、前記凸面が、リッジ(296)を形成するように前記凹面の第2の部分に出会う、請求項に記載の内燃機関。
  4. 前記対向するピストンは、前記各ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に各ピストンの端面の凸面(295)が、他のピストンの凹面の第2の部分(292)でスキッシュ・ゾーンを画定するように、前記ボア内に方向付けられる、請求項に記載の内燃機関。
  5. 前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点(TDC)位置の近くにある場合に、各スキッシュ・ゾーンの対向する凹面部分および凸面部分が、前記ボウルの間で画定されるキャビティに向かってスキッシュ流を生じる、請求項に記載の内燃機関。
  6. 請求項2から5のいずれか一項に記載の内燃機関を動作させる方法であって、
    記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの下死点位置から移動するにつれて前記吸気ポートを通して前記ボアの中に空気を導入することと
    前記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点位置に向かって移動すると、前記ピストンの対向する端面の間で空気の充填時にタンブリング運動(343)を引き起こすことと
    燃焼室の中に燃料のチャージ(248)を噴射することと、を特徴とする方法。
  7. 旋回運動(347)が、前記ボアの中に導入される前記空気に強いられる、請求項に記載の方法。
  8. 請求項2から5のいずれか一項に記載の内燃機関を動作させる方法であって、
    記ピストンが前記ボア内でそれぞれの上死点位置に向かって移動すると、前記ピストンの端面の間に細長い楕円形状を有する燃焼室(300)を形成することと
    (302)に対して斜めに向けられた方向に前記燃焼室の中にチャージエアのスキッシュ流(341、342)提供することと
    前記スキッシュ流(341、342)および旋回チャージエア(347)に応じて前記燃焼室内にチャージエアの少なくとも1つのタンブリング運動(343)を発生させることと
    前記燃焼室の前記長軸(302)に沿って前記燃料室内に燃料(248)を噴射することと、を特徴とする方法。
