Abstract

320,439. English Electric Co., Ltd., and Ferguson, J. M. July 28, 1928. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - In an internal-combustion engine having a pair of oppositely moving pistons in one cylinder provided with recesses c forming a compression space coaxial with the fuel nozzle a, the surfaces d of the piston heads adjacent the compression space are arranged so that the air is forced from the narrow spaces e in a direction tangential to a circle coaxial with the nozzle, thus producing turbulence. When only one fuel nozzle is provided, the recesses c form a conical compression space with a spherical base b, whilst when two opposed nozzles are provided, the compression space is in the form of two cones with their faces meeting in the centre of the cylinder.
