Abstract

364,395. Two-stroke engines. MORTON, A. A., 78, Rue de Passy, Paris. Feb. 16, 1931, No. 4863. Convention date, Feb. 24, 1930. [Class 7 (ii).] In an engine with oppositely moving pistons 2, 7 the common combustion chamber is of smaller diameter than the main or both cylinders. In one form one piston and its cylinder are of less diameter than the other pair and the combustion chamber is formed within the smaller cylinder ; in another form the combustion chamber is in a partition between two cylinders of the same diameter. In the form shown the piston 7 may be stationary during the power stroke and move only for admission of the air charge. Cylinders.-The air passes through helical passages 13 in a casing 12 surrounding the upper cylinder into an annulus 14 ; the metal of the cylinder is thin at the ports 8 to allow the air to enter the cylinder without disturbing its movement around the annulus and thereby ensure swirl within the cylinder. Liquid fuel is injected through the nozzle 11.
