Abstract

357,980. Four-stroke engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London, and ALCOCK, J. F., 10, Buckingham Road, Shoreham, Sussex. June 30, 1930, No. 19804. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), 7 (v), and 7 (vi).] Cylinders, construction of, and cooling ; cylinders receiving liquid fuel; valves.-In an engine working with liquid-fuel injection, air is admitted through a valvecontrolled inlet with a whirling motion, and an additional air charge is delivered to the cylinder at or towards the end of the induction stroke through ports uncovered by the piston and also arranged to increase the whirling effect. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the piston F<1> compresses at its lower side air admitted by a valve A<3>, and this air furnishes the additional charge which enters the cylinder through tangential ports A<1>. In a similar manner, air is supplied through these ports at the end of the working stroke for scavenging purposes. A single valve B<2> serves for both inlet and exhaust, these functions being further controlled by a rotary valve H<3>. Fuel is injected at J parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber B. The passage leading to the valve B<2> may be spirally shaped so as to give the entering air the whirling motion. In a modification, Fig. 3, separate inlet and exhaust valves P<2>, P<3> are provided, and the combustion chamber Q is formed in the end of the piston and provided with a metal heat-insulating liner Q<4>. The fuelinjection device R directs a jet parallel to the axis of the combustion chamber but at one side thereof. In another form, the combustion chamber is constituted by a concave depression in the piston, and the fuel is injected in a number of radial jets from a central sprayer. Starting is facilitated by reducing the whirling effect of the air charge either by closing some of the ports A<1>, or by holding the valve A<3> continuously open or closed. Specifications 261,435, [Class 7 (vi), Internal-combustion engines, Valves &c. for], and 342,304 are referred to.
