Abstract
380,337. Oil engines. LANG, F., 41, Laimerstrasse, Munich, Germany. Jan. 21, 1932, No. 1886. [Class 7 (iii).] In an internal-combustion engine of the Diesel type having a main combustion chamber d, Fig. 1, with a fuel nozzle e and an air pocket f opening thereinto on opposite sides, a baffle g, in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder, extends from the air pocket side towards the nozzle side and partly separates the combustion chamber from the piston-swept space in the cylinder a. The inlet valve k opens into and the exhaust valve may open out of the combustion chamber d, which is offset with respect to the axis of the cylinder, and communicates therewith by a channel h, a flange m on the piston preventing fuel oil from reaching the cylinder wall. The lip of the baffle g is oblique to promote turbulence and direct air and injected fuel into the pocket f during the compression stroke and the mixture flows out of the pocket during the expansion stroke to meet the fuel then being injected, the axes of the air pocket and the nozzle being in a single plane perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder. In a modified form, the combustion chamber is substantially 8-shaped with the nozzle and the air pocket at its indented portions. The mouth of the pocket f is set back and the baffle constitutes a ledge extending on both sides thereof about half way around the chamber with its lip conforming to the outline thereof, the baffle forming a portion of the wall of a duct directing air into the pocket during compression.
