Abstract

640,410. Two - stroke and four - stroke engines. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd.. LUBBOCK. I., and RIGBY R. Feb. 26, 1948, No. 5805. [Classes 7(ii) and 7 (iii)] To facilitate ignition, the air charge is: heated in a regenerator 18 through which the exhaust gases pass when leaving the engine cylinder by a valve 15 and the entry of fuel through an injector 19 is timed so that ignition begins at between 15 and 30 degrees of crank angle after top deadcentre. A four-stroke engine is shown in which the charge enters the cylinder through a valve below the regenerator, which comprises superposed layers of gauze or loosely-packed wires of stainless steel or nickel chrome alloy and is held by a perforated cone 20. Alternatively the regenerator may extend across the cylinder and both the valves be overhead. In a twostroke engine, the regenerator may be' placed on the piston face and the exhaust after passing through the regenerator flows out through co-operating ports in the piston and cylinder. The air charge may be supplied by a compressor driven by the engine or by an exhaust-gas turbine deriving its gas supply from either the engine or a separate combustion chamber supplied with air by a compressor driven by the engine crank-shaft.
