Abstract

894,312. Two-stroke engines; valves; charge compressors. BUCHI, A. July 30, 1958 [Sept. 17, 1957], No. 24558/58. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6). In a two-stroke engine having piston controlled exhaust ports 9, Fig. 1, the scavenging and charging air enters through two inlet valves 10, 11, disposed concentrically one inside another in the cylinder head the supply chambers 18, 19, of which produce rotation of the entering air. In Fig. 1 the supply chambers 18, 19, are spiral to produce rotation of the entering air and are fed through a cooler 42 by an exhaust driven compressor 14 connected to an exhaust belt 15 which is spiral and associated with inclined ports 9 so that the exhaust gases rotate therein in the direction of the swirl in the cylinder. The valve 10 may be opened before valve 11 or vice versa, and the fuel injector 32 injects the fuel into a combustion chamber recess 9<SP>1</SP> in the piston in the direction of the swirling air. The rotation of the entering air may alternatively be produced by vanes. The inlet valves of a pair of adjacent cylinders may be fed by a common inlet conduit 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, leading to spiral chambers 19<SP>11</SP>, 19<SP>111</SP>, around the valves. In a modification, Fig. 7, the valve chamber 18 is fed with scavenging air by an exhaust turbocharger 39 and the chamber 19 is fed with supercharging air by a supercharger 13<SP>1</SP> driven from the camshaft 5 and having its inlet pipe 41 connected to the outlet of the turbocharger 39, each compressor delivering through a cooler 42, 43.
