Abstract

866,017. Four-stroke engines; charge pumps; valves. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ A.G. Oct. 23, 1957 [Nov. 9, 1956], No. 33142/57. Classes 7(2) and 7(6). [Also in Group XXVI] Exhaust gases released by a cylinder exhaust valve 9, Fig. 2, of a fuel-injection engine pass via a manifold 12 through a turbine 15 (or turbines) powering via gearing 18 the engine output shaft or otherwise yielding useful energy externally of the engine, and then through a turbine 16 (or turbines) driving a supercharging compressor 26, the turbine 15 being so designed that even at full engine load the exhaust gases are expelled from the cylinder over the entire piston travel against a pressure at least as high as the charging pressure. The cylinder pressure drop necessary before opening the cylinder inlet valve 8 is effected, or completed after making part of the piston intake stroke, by opening an auxiliary exhaust valve 10 leading via a manifold 13 directly to the turbine 16. The valve 10 may be a poppet valve with a cylindrical extension 24, Fig. 3, and the manifold 13 may be designed to assist charging by transmitting a negative pressure wave back into the cylinder.
