Class 7(2) .Gears 19<SP>1</SP>, 20<SP>1</SP>. 20<SP>11</SP> 19" and a phasechanging unit 15<SP>1</SP> interconnect crankshafts 18<SP>1</SP>, 18<SP>11</SP> of opposed pistons 12<SP>1</SP> 12" controlling inlet and exhaust ports 10<SP>1</SP>, 21 respectively, the unit 15<SP>1</SP> being adjustable by an engine speed governor or manually to advance or retard one crankshaft relative to the other and so vary the port timings, irom both inlet and exhaust port opening and closing symmetrical about a common crankshaft bottom dead centre at starting or low load to exhaust port opening just before inlet port opening and exhaust port closing considerably after inlet port closing at normal or high load, efficient charging by a compressor 17. driven by an exhaust gas turbine 16 being thus attained at all loads. The unit 15<SP>1</SP> may comprise helical sliding splines or differential gearing.
