Abstract
559,771. Two-stroke internal combustion engines. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd., and ISSIGONIS, A. A. Jan. 18, 1943, No. 904. [Classes 7 (ii) and (vi)] In a two-stroke internal-combustion engine, the cylinder (or each cylinder) has a single induction passage f supplying two inlet passages e, j of different sectional areas, the larger passage being controlled by a valve i and the smaller being adapted, when valve i is closed, to cause a high gas velocity to prevent irregular running at slow speeds. In the two-cylinder construction shown, the large passage e leads to a chamber b partly framed in a two cylinder block a while the small passages lead one to each cylinder through further passages j. The passage e is connected by pipe f to a carburetter or, as shown, to a pump h supplied by the carburetter g. The main throttle valve k is connected by links m, n and lost-motion device o to the valve i so that when the valve k is in a slow-running position the valve i is shut and the mixture enters the cylinder only by the passages j. The valve i is opened only when the main throttle has been moved sufficiently to take up the lost-motion o.
