Abstract

507,974. Four-stroke engines; cooling exhaust; pumps. TENNANT, W. J. (Aktiebolaget Milo) July 7, 1938, No. 20198. [Class 7 (ii)] In a four-stroke engine in which an exhaust-driven turbine 20 drives a charging blower 18, part of the charging air is diverted by a pipe 29 to mix with the exhaust gas and so to cool the exhaust valve 13 and the passage 30 adjacent thereto. The remainder of the charging air passes to an inlet valve 12, liquid fuel being added in a carburetter 16, or through a nozzle fed by a pump controlled to supply fuel during a period intermediate the opening and closing of the valve 12. By providing large overlap of the exhaust and inlet periods some of the air supplied through the pipe 29 enters the cylinder.
