Abstract
693,688. Supercharging; cooling charge. DAVEY, PAXMAN & CO., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1950 [Feb. 14, 1950], No. 3748/50. Class 7 (ii). In means for supplying air to an internalcombustion engine a for combustion purposes comprising an air turbine e; whose outlet communicates with the intake manifold of the engine and an air compressor c driven by the turbine e and delivering air through a cooler d to the turbine inlet the compressor c is arranged to receive air from an auxiliary compressor b driven by the engine, or, by a turbine driven by the engine exhaust gases or by driving means independent of the engine a, such as an electric or other motor. not shown. In one modification, an inter-cooler is located between the two compressors, whilst in a further modification, the second compressor is fed by an exhaust actuated turbo-charger. The arrangements provide for lowering the temperature of the charging air to a value' below that of the available cooling medium without reducing the density of the charge. The apparatus may be provided in a self-contained unit capable of connection to any engine. Specification 622,077 is referred to.
