Abstract

571,741. Pumps for four-stroke engines. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., MANSELL, S. W., and MARCHANT, F. C. I. March 2, 1944, No. 3933. [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine in which the cylinders are arranged in one or more rows and cooled by air flowing transversely of the rows, a supercharger 7 at the rear of the engine feeds the charge through a duct 19 to a collector at the front which is connected by pipes leading back to the cylinders. The air intake which is placed inside a cowl 9 surrounding the engine leads, via a carburetter 14, to the supercharger 7 which delivers through ducts 16, 19, and a collector ring 20 forming the mouth of the cowl, to pipes 21 connected to the cylinders. The charge is cooled in a heat-exchanger 17 arranged in the air flowing through the cowl. In a modification, this heat-exchanger is replaced by two heat-exchangers in branches inside the leading edge of the cowl which has an inlet for cooling air at the rear edge and an outlet at a zone of negative pressure. Branches extend from the duct 19 through the heatexchangers to a second supercharger at the front of the engine which replaces the collector and has individual pipes leading back to the engine cylinders. The rear supercharger may be duplicated by a second supercharger driven either mechanically by the engine or by an exhaust-driven turbine and heat-exchangers may be arranged between the two superchargers or between the second supercharger and the engine or in both places.
