Abstract
1,020,942. Cooling charge of supercharged engines; centrifugal blowers. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. March 13, 1964, No. 10869/64. Headings F1B and F1C. High pressure air from the outlet 31 of a multi-stage supercharger 16 is cooled in a heatexchanger 15 by low pressure air from the first supercharger stage 37 and as coolant. The supercharger is an exhaust-driven turbocharger with a turbine, having a set of radial blades 23 and axial blades 24, integral with the compressor having axial blades 26 and radial blades 28, 30. The air from the axial stage 26 is divided at 35, part flowing to the radial stages 28, 30, while the remainder flows through annular space 36 to chamber 37 to form the coolant. The cooled supercharging air from the heat-exchanger flows to intake manifold 32 whilst the coolant air escapes at 41.
