Abstract

1453274 Cooling supercharging air in IC engines KUHNLE KOPP & KAUSCH AG 5 Feb 1975 [8 Feb 1974] 4869/75 Heading F1B In a supercharged I.C. engine 1, the charge-air 5 is cooled in a heat exchanger 9 by ambient air 13 impelled by a fan 14. The fan 14 is driven by a turbine 11, through which all the charge-air passes. Preferably, exhaust gases 2 drive a turbocharger 7. The fan 14 is preferably mounted behind the heat exchanger 9 to suck air therethrough and rotates at the same speed as the turbine 11, being mounted on the same shaft 16. The pressure drop across turbine 11 is small compared with that across the compressor 6 of the turbocharger 7, so that the fan 14 rotates at a fraction of the speed of the turbocharger 7. A by-pass conduit 21 controlled by a manually or automatically operated valve 22 is provided to by-pass the heat exchanger 9 when the charge-air is not to be cooled.
