Abstract

564,216. Gas turbines. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd. June 3, 1943, No. 8914. Convention date, June 9, 1942. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVI] A turbo-exhaust driven supercharger with a rotor 50 and blades 48 is supplied with gases from some .of the exhaust ports of an internalcombustion engine, the other exhaust ports supplying nozzles 23 which aid the suction of atmospheric air through an inlet 63, to cool the rotor and blades. The engine may be used on an aircraft, and may also have a mechanically-driven supercharger. The rotor and hollow shaft are filled with sodium or a like substance to aid the cooling of the rotor. In a modification, the inlet to the pipe 18 is smaller in diameter. Fig. 6 shows a further arrangement. Cooling air enters a pipe 64, due to the forward movement of the aircraft, and also passes over the lips 60. Exhaust gases, as well as cooling air, pass away through the pipe 18. Superchargers may be fitted on each side of the engine.
