Abstract

784,531. Internal combustion engine gas generators. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. Feb. 27, 1956 [Jan. 26, 1955], No. 2288/55. Class 7(1) [Also in Group XXXIII] The invention comprises in combination a helicopter - supporting rotor and a twostroke fuel-injection compressionignition engine serving mainly to drive a centrifugal axial or diagonal flow compressor from the output of which the engine is supplied with its charge of air, the engine and compressor serving as a gas generator the exhaust gases of which .are delivered as motive fluid for driving the supporting rotor and the engine including means for automatically varying the compression ratio of the engine for limiting the maximum cylinder pressure to a safe value. In Figs. 1 and 2 a centrifugal air compressor 13 supplies air to the twostroke fuel-injection compression-ignition engine 12. The exhaust gases of the engine are supplied through the pipe 25 and through the hollow blades 27 of the rotor to propelling nozzles 28. In Figs. 3 and 4 the engine supplies exhaust gases to a turbine 41 which drives the rotor 26a, 27a through a reduction gear. The compression ratio is preferably varied respectively to the pressure of the compressor output for example as disclosed in Specifications 752,895 and 757,639.
