Abstract
283,042. Brown, E. May 4, 1927. Drawings to. Specification. Driving-gear.-Two-stroke-cycle engines having exhaust and air ports uncovered in succession by the piston are charged by a centrifugal blower driven by an exhaust gas turbine and an auxiliary motor whose output varies directly as its speed. The exhaust turbine and the auxiliary motor receive their supplies of energy without control by governing or regulating gear. If the auxiliary motor is a low pressure steam turbine it is connected direct to the supply pipe; if an electric motor direct to the mains. The auxiliary motor is sufficiently powerful to supply scavenge air at light or no load when there is no power available from the exhaust gases. Two auxiliary motors, one a turbine the other electric, may be used together or independently with the exhaust turbine to drive the blower. The electric motor may be compound wound or shunt wound with an opposing separately excited winding.
