Abstract

770,409. Internal-combustion engine gas generators. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS, Ltd. April 12, 1955, No. 11296/54. Class 7 (1). A gas generator comprises a compressor and a two-stroke fuel injection engine arranged mainly to drive the compressor the output of which is supplied to the engine as its charge of air in which the inlet ports of the engine are open for between 142‹ and 152‹ of the cycle and the exhaust ports of the engine are open for between 177‹ and 187‹ of the cycle and the areas of the ports are between 1.8 and 2.2 times the areas of the corresponding ports of the same engine when conventionally arranged to produce solely shaft horse power whereby the gas generator provides a very much greater gas flow for example 50 per cent. more than the same engine conventionally arranged to produce solely shaft horse power. The exhaust ports are arranged to open more than 90‹ before bottom dead centre and to close more than 90‹ after bottom dead centre. The inlet ports may be open for 147‹ of the cycle and exhaust ports may be open for 182‹ of the cycle the exhaust ports opening approximately 17¢‹ before the inlet ports open. The engine inlet ports may have a maximum open area of approximately 44 sq. cms. and the engine exhaust ports may have a maximum open area of approximately 39 sq. cms. for an engine of 2¢ litres capacity. The generator may comprise a four cylinder in line engine and the compressor a two stage centrifugal compressor. The compressor outlet is connected by volute passage 23 to a chamber 24 which is in turn connected by a sloping passage 26 to the inlet ports. Exhaust ports 27 are connected to an outlet conduit 28. The compression ratio is dependent on the output pressure by means of a plug 30. The mechanism is described in Specifications 752,895 and 757,639. The exhaust ports may be open for only 166‹ and the inlet ports for 134‹. The exhaust ports may open 16‹ before the inlet ports. The invention is particularly applicable to a gas generator for driving an unchoked turbine as disclosed in Specification 770,408.
