Abstract
583,843. Motor power plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and CHITTENDEN, J. P. Oct. 23, 1942, No. 14931. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine 9 receives (a) compressed air, (b) exhaust gas plus compressed air, or (c) exhaust gas plus surplus scavenging air, the motive fluid being supplied by a floating-piston internal combustion engine driven compressor 1. The engine may, operate on two-stroke compression ignition cycle and include two opposed pistons 2. The compressor comprises piston 3, inlet pipe 4 and a pipe 5 which delivers air to the engine cylinder 1. Fuel is injected by injector 6 supplied by a pump 7. The gases pass through a pipe 8 to the turbine, then through a steam generator 11 to an exhaust 12. Steam from 11 is led to a turbine 13'which may be driven by steam only, or have gas and steam blading. The turbine rotors may be geared together, or be on one shaft. Auxiliaries such as a lubricating oil pump, oil cooler and speed governor 14, may be common to both turbines. The governor may act on the fuel pump 7, and also control an inlet throttle valve 15 for the turbine 13. Where compressed air only is.used in the turbine 9, the engine exhaust passes directly to the generator 11.
