Abstract

[Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A helico-centrifugal compressor driven by an exhaust gas turbine is used to supercharge a two-stroke I.C. engine. The helical blading of the impeller makes an angle with the tangent at the periphery of the impeller whose cosine is greater than the relative velocity of the air divided by twice the peripheral velocity of the impeller. The quantity of air drawn in by the compressor during one compression stroke and one expansion stroke of the I.C. engine amounts to at least twice the swept volume of the combustion cylinders and to not more than that volume in its compressed state at the compressor delivery. The exhaust gas turbine may be geared mechanically, hydraulically, pneumatically or electrically with the I.C. engine. Or, the turbine may be free and provided with an electric or other motor for starting and arranged to recover any excess power developed by the turbine. When the I.C. engine is used as a producer of power gas, two or more stages of helico-centrifugal compressors may be used. Such an I.C. engine may be of the free-piston type.
