Abstract
594,996. Gas-turbine plant. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and WELSH, R. J. Sept. 30, 1942, No. 13740. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a power plant comprising a gas turbine 25 or other prime mover driven by exhaust gases from the combustion cylinder 1 of an internalcombustion engine driven air compressor, a fuel-supply regulator for the engine, and a branch pipe 40 from the exhaust outlet of the turbine 25 conveying exhaust gas into heattransfer relation with the air admitted to the compressor, a governing arrangement actuates means for simultaneously increasing the quantity of exhaust gas diverted to the pipe 40 and decreasing the fuel supply on a decrease in the load on the plant. As shown, a valve 39, Fig. 2, for diverting exhaust gas into the pipe 40 is actuated through linkage 29, 31, 36, 38 from a governor 28 driven by the turbine 25. The link 31 is also connected by members 32, 34, Fig. 1, to a rack 10a controlling a camactuated pump 10 supplying fuel injectors 9 on the cylinder 1. The exhaust gas diverted to the pipe 40 may mix with the air in the inlet pipe 14 or may be passed through a tubular heat-exchanger traversed by the air, the exhaust being returned to the exhaust pipe. The compressor shown is of the opposed freepiston type, each piston assembly comprising a power piston 4, compressor piston 5 and buffer piston 6. Air from the compressor cylinders 2 is conveyed by pipes 15 to the annular space around piston-controlled inlet ports 1a in the cylinder 1, and piston-controlled exhaust ports 1b are connected by a pipe 16 to the turbine 25. The fuel-pump cam 11 is actuated through a lever 20 and link 21 from the synchronizing links 7 connecting the pistons 5 to a lever 8 pivoted from the cylinder 1.
