Abstract

735,874. Centrifugal pumps; gas turbine engines. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. May 14, 1953 [May 20, 1952], No. 12785/52. Classes 110 (1) and 110 (3). A gas turbine fuel supply system comprising a main fuel pump and at least one other pump, has fuel bled from the discharge of the main pump and led to an hydraulic motor driving the other pump. The second pump may be a booster pump for the main pump, a pump for supplying fuel to the exhaust pipe of a jet propulsion engine or to a reheat chamber between two turbines in a compound gas turbine engine or a pump supplying liquid for injection into the intake of the compressor. Fuel is supplied to the combustion equipment 11 of a gas turbine jet propulsion engine by an engine-driven main fuel pump 19 through a fuel line 17, throttle valve 18, manifold 16 and burners 15. The pump 19 may be of the positive-displacement fixed capacity or positive-displacement variable capacity or of the centrifugal kind. Fuel is supplied to the inlet 19 from the fuel tank 21 by a booster pump 22 driven by an hydraulic motor 23 supplied with working fluid from the fuel line 17. In a modification, additional fuel is burnt in the exhaust pipe 13. This fuel is supplied by a pump also driven by an hydraulic motor supplied with working fluid from the fuel line 17. This pump may draw fuel either direct from the tank 21 or from the discharge of the pump 22. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the booster pump 22 is driven by an electric motor 26 and the pump 42 which supplies a mixture of water and methanol to the intake of the compressor 10 through injectors 45 is driven by an hydraulic motor 46 supplied with working fluid by the pipe line 17. Modifications of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 in which the fuel tank is cooled or the fuel leaving the hydraulic motor is cooled in a heat exchanger before entering the tank are described. The working fluid for the hydraulic motor may be taken off from the discharge volute of the pump 19 and may be returned to the suction side of the pump. The hydraulic motor may be of the turbine or Pelton wheel kind or may be of the positive displacement type such as a gear or sliding vane motor. Specification 735,913 is referred to.
