Abstract

538,022. Fluid jet propulsion. EICHELBERG, G. Jan. 15, 1940, No. 891. [Class 4] A plant for producing driving gases for the jet propulsion of aircraft comprises at least one internal combustion engine for driving a compressor, the internal combustion engine being charged by a blower which takes air from the supply delivered by the compressor and compresses it further, the blower being driven by a waste gas turbine which uses the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine which are thereby reduced in pressure before discharge from a reaction nozzle separate from the main nozzle. In one form a compressor 1 driven by an internal combustion engine 2 takes in air through a forwardly directed nozzle 3 and delivers it through a pipe 25, regulating valve 27 and combustion chamber 28 to a reaction nozzle 29. Air for the engine 2 is supplied by a blower 10 taking air through a branch 9 from the pipe 25 and delivering it through a pipe 11, heat exchanger 12a, where it is cooled, and pipe 13 to the engine. Exhaust gases from a pipe 16 drive a gas turbine 17 coupled to the blower 10 and the exhaust gases from the turbine are led to a separate nozzle 20. The cooling liquid for the engine 2 is circulated through a heat exchanger 23a in advance of the heat exchanger 12a. A number of internal combustion engines and compressors and a number of charging units and heat exchangers may be so interconnected that any of the elements of the plant may be switched on or off independently of the others, and in one form described three engine compressor units, two turbo blowers and four main reaction nozzles and four waste gas nozzles are provided.
