Abstract

566,531. Combustion-product power plant. PESCARA, R. P. Dec. 18, 1942, No. 18036. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1941. [Class 7 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a power plant comprising an engine or turbine driven by exhaust gases from an internal-combustion gas-generator of the freepiston type, the air supply is compressed before admission to the compressor part of the gas generator and is cooled before admission to the power cylinder. In one form, Fig. 1, the piston assembly comprises a power piston 3 moving in a cylinder 1 and a compressor piston 4 moving in a cylinder 2, air being compressed in the space 2<1> and the spaces 22 serving for cushioning. Exhaust from the cylinder 1 drives a main turbine 17 and an auxiliary turbine 24 driving a blower 21 which supplies air through a cooler 20 to the inlet valve 5 of the compression space. The proportion of air diverted from the outlet pipe of the blower 21 through the cooler 20 is determined by a throttle 23 actuated by a thermostat 231 in the exhaust pipe 16. Alternatively, the cooling fluid in the cooler 20 may be regulated in accordance with the temperature or pressure of the gases in the pipe 16 or of the exhaust from the turbine 17. In modifications, the exhaust gases from the generator are conveyed to the turbines 24, 17 in series and may be byepassed around the turbine 24 by opening a valve connected to a hand or governor-actuated rack 12 which adjusts the fuel pump 11 of the gas-generator, so that the cooling action is dispensed with at low pressures of the exhaust gases. Additional fuel may be injected into the exhaust gases between the turbines 24, 17 under overload operation.
