Abstract

519,806. Speed governors; gas turbines. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Oct.' 4, 1938, No. 28761. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1937. [Classes 57 and 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a power plant comprising one or more internal-combustion engines 1 for producing power gas and an expansion engine or turbine 2 driven by the power gas, the speed of the engine 1 being automatically controlled by a governor 10 driven by the expansion engine, a relief valve 32 is provided in the pipe 2' connecting the engines 1, 2 and the pressure at which this valve will open to permit escape of power gas is varied according to the load on the expansion engine 2. As shown, the engine 1 is a two-stroke engine driving a compressor 4 delivering scavenging air to a receiver 5 and to a piston-controlled admission port 6 on the engine cylinder. A piston-controlled exhaust port 8 is connected through the pipe 2' to the turbine 2. An engine-driven governor 9 acts through a bell-crank lever 18 on the member 19 controlling supply of fuel by a pump 20 to the engine. A governor 10 driven by a turbine 2 acts through a lever 25 and rod 26 on the valve 27 of a fluid-pressure relay 11, which controls the admission of liquid under pressure from a pipe 29 to a pipe 15 or its escape to a pipe 28. On a reduction in speed of the turbine 2 below a set value, pressure fluid is admitted to the pipe 15 and acts upon a piston 23 to increase the compression of the spring 21 acting on the governor 9, so that the speed of the engine 1 is increased. The pressure fluid in the pipe 15 also acts through a piston 34 and spring 33 on the piston valve 32, which controls a relief passage 12 from the pipe 2<1>; on increase of the speed of the turbine 2 above a set value, liquid escapes from the pipe 15 and allows the valve 32 to open the pipe 2' to the relief passage and reduce the supply of power gas to the turbine. The setting of the governor 10 is adjustable by means of a hand wheel 30. A number of power-gas producing engines may be connected in parallel and may be controlled simultaneously or individually in accordance with the load on the expansion engine. In modifications, the power gas is supplied by a two-crankshaft opposed-piston engine, or by a free-piston engine in which' the number of strokes per. minute is controlled in accordance with the load on the expansion engine; a centrifugal compressor may be employed, and pneumatic, electric or mechanical transmission may be employed between the parts of the regulating apparatus.
