Abstract
455,358. Speed governors; motor-power plant. JOHANSSON, J. E., 5, Kungsgatan, Gothenburg, and AKTIEBOLAGET GOTAVERKEN, Gothenburg, Sweden. April 24, 1935, No. 12351. [Classes 57 and 110 (iii)] [See also Group XXVII] In a plant comprising one or more internalcombustion engines 1, the exhaust gases from which are mixed with air from an enginedriven compressor 2 and utilized as the driving medium for one or more turbines or other motors, an outlet valve 23 in the conduit 10 from the engines to the turbines or motors is arranged to allow escape of the gases when the turbines or motors are idling or running on low load. In order to maintain the speed of the internal-combustion engines between a low and high limit, the outlet valve 23 is adapted to open when the speed falls below a lower limit and the supply of fuel to the engines is decreased when the speed rises above an upper limit. As shown, a twostroke engine 1 drives a double-acting compressor 2 supplying scavenging air through a container 5 to the engine, from which a mixture of exhaust gases and scavenging air is conveyed through the conduit 10 to' a double-acting reciprocating engine 12 and to a turbine 14, which may be provided with a reversing device 18. The outlet valve 23, Fig. 2, is interposed between the conduit 10 and an outlet conduit 24 and is normally closed by fluid pressure acting on a piston 57 on the valve stem ; the piston moves in a cylinder 58 connected through a pipe 59 to the air container 5 or the conduit 10. A check valve 55 is provided above the escape valve 23 and allows the passage of the gases through the conduit 10 and a container 52 to the motors 12, 14. The valve 23 and the fuel supply to the engine 1 are controlled by a governor 27 on an engine cam shaft 22 driven from the engine shaft 20 through a chain 21. When the speed of the engine 1 falls below a lower limit, owing for instance to back pressure due to a reduced consumption of the driving medium by the motors 12, 14, the governor 27 acts through a lever 43 to open a relief valve 49 in a conduit 50 connected to the cylinder 58, so that the outlet valve 23 is open, allowing the escape of driving medium to the conduit 24. When the speed of the engine 1 exceeds an upper limit, due for instance to an increased consumption of the driving- medium by the motors 12, 14, the fuel supply to the engine 1 is reduced by the governor 27 acting through a lever 42 and link 45 on a fuel control device 46, which can also be adjusted by hand. The governor weights 27 are pivoted on supports 29 on the sprocket wheel 30 and have lugs 31 engaging recesses in a sleeve 32 sliding on the shaft 22 and having an extension 33 acting on the levers 42, 43. The sleeve 32 is acted upon by springs 34, 35 of unequal strength and separated by a ring 36, which slides on the shaft 22 and is normally held by the stronger spring 35 against a shoulder 40 on the shaft. The spring 35 is compressed by movement of the governor to actuate the lever 42 but movement to actuate the lever 43 is controlled only by the spring 34.
