Abstract
498,900. Free-piston air compressors. PESCARA, R. P. July 16, 1937, No. 18825 /38. Convention date, July 17, 1936. Divided out of 498,610. [Class 8 (i)] An internal-combustion free-piston compressor, particularly one in which the air passes wholly into the engine cylinder from which the exhaust and scavenging air are supplied as working fluid to an engine, comprises pistons 3 which effect the main compression. during the strokes in which the motor pistons are compressing, and pneumatic accumulators 11 which effect this compression. The accumulators are fed from reservoirs 23, through reduction valves 24 adjustable by hand or automatically in accordance e.g. with the feed pressure, on the opening of a valve 20. Air at the reduced pressure is fed through a subsequently opened valve 28 to a cylinder 26 and piston controlling the quantity of fuel supplied either by a cam acting on a control rod or by a slotted cam which determines limits for a point on a lever acting on the control rod under the influence of a speed governor.
