Abstract

332,409. Stow, G. R. July 23, 1929. Engine acting as compressor on alternate strokes. -Steam admitted above a piston g effects the power stroke; air is admitted on the same side to scavenge the steam, and this air is compressed on the return stroke which is effected by the fly-wheel. The engine may also drive any machine. The piston may be doubleacting, the same cycle occurring on both sides. The steam is admitted through a valve h operated through a rod by the crankshaft. Air admitted to the crank casing through a valve o on the upstroke is forced into the cylinder through ports k<2> at the end of the stroke, together with a fine waterspray entering by the pipe l, and discharges the steam through a valve actuated in the same way as the valve h. The timing of the valves may be adjusted. On the upstroke, the ports k<2> are closed by the piston, and an outlet valve in the head is closed simultaneously. The air is compressed and delivered through an automatic valve. The exhaust steam may be delivered to a second engine.
