Abstract

464,022. Two-stroke engines ; valves. PATCHETT, G. W. Aug. 9, 1935, Nos. 22535 and 34214. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine wherein a working piston 2 and a secondary piston 4 are disposed in a cylinder 1, the piston 4 being actuated by a connecting rod 12 attached to a crank-pin 9a on a shaft which is driven by gearing from the main crank-shaft, the angularity of the secondary crank is such that the piston 4 moves away from the piston 2 during the induction period, moves towards it during the latter part of the compression stroke, and follows it during the first part of the power stroke so that the highest point of compression is reached after the piston 2 has passed its top dead centre position and the ignition devices are protected from the effects of the combustion gases. Towards the end of the power stroke, a cam 14 on the crank-pin 9a operates a rod 16 to open a valve 18 in the head of the piston 4, thereby admitting a charge of fuel or scavenging-air to the cylinder from a compressor 24. The valve-guide is supported by inclined webs 19 adapted to create turbulence in the incoming charge. The valve may operate automatically, the cam-mechanism being dispensed with.
