Abstract

475,584. Two-stroke-cycle opposed-piston engines. HUNT, F. O. May 25, 1936, No. 14678. [Class 7 (ii)] Pairs of pistons 3, 4 in axially-aligned cylinders 1 drive a central shaft through pin-and-slot mechanism. The adjacent pistons 3 are rigidly connected to a slotted-crosshead in which slides the bush 6 enclosing the crank-pin 7. The remote pistons are of two diameters the larger portions being connected by rods to a second cross-head in which works a crankpin diametrally opposite to the crank-pin 7. The stepped pistons work over a fixed cylindrical frame member 13 forming low- and high-pressure pump-spaces 12, 18 respectively. Air induced in the pump-space 12 is transferred to the reservoir 16 by way of valve 15, and hence to the pump-space 18 through valve 17. After further compression most of the air finds its way past a valve 19 to the combustion chamber. Part of the air, however, is conveyed by a pipe 27 to an air-oil spraying valve, which together with an oilpump injection nozzle is operated from a cam on the crank-shaft. The wall of the pump space 12 is formed with a helical rib having a cover 14. The valve 19 relies on inertia for its closing movement.
