Abstract
3911. Harrington, E. L. Feb. 14. Two-stroke-cycle engines.-In an engine compressing air in the crank chamber and with an initial combustion chamber at the head of, and smaller in diameter than, the cylinder and into which a projection on the piston enters, exhaust ports 10 are controlled by a cylindrical valve 11 reciprocated in such combustion chamber by rods 14 and cams 15 on an overhead shaft 19. At the lower part of its stroke, the piston is guided on ribs 4, between which are large admission ports 20. The valve 11 closes after the piston has made part of its return stroke, and fuel is injected by the pump 18 into the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke.
