Abstract

4363. Wilson, W. G. Feb. 26. Gas or explosive-vapour engines.-A two-strokecycle engine having an independent air - pump supplying air during the compression stroke is provided with means whereby, near the end of the compression stroke, the passage of air to the working cylinder is restricted, and the air is directed through another passage to feed fuel to the cylinder, expansion taking place in the working cylinder only. The pump a, on its out-stroke, draws in air through a valve m, and on the return stroke forces the air past a non-return valve o and through a passage n to the cylinder b. In one modification, air is compressed in the crank case, and at the end of the out-stroke of the pump, enters through the port v and, passing through the valve o, scavenges the cylinder. The restricting-means may be provided by either or both of the pistons closing the air-passage between the cylinders, or, as shown, by a projection 3 on the piston entering and closing the passage 4. The remainder of the air in the pump passes by a passage q and sprays the fuel through a valve q. Ignition may be effected by a sparking-plug y, or by one or more insulated heat-retaining mantles in the combustion chamber. (For Figure see next page.)
