Starting. - Air for scavenging is compressed in the crank chamber, and mixture is supplied to the working cylinder 1 by a pump 2 having its piston 90 degrees in advance of the working piston, the whole of the distribution being controlled by a piston valve 17, Fig. 11. The downstroke of the working piston 5 is effected at starting by compressed air admitted through a port 18 in the piston valve 17 and a port 19 in the cylinder. During this stroke, mixture is drawn into the pump 2 through a port 23 in the valve. Towards the end of the stroke, the working piston 5 overruns the exhaust ports 29, and while these ports are still open, air from the crank -chamber is admitted to the cylinder through a passage 27 in the valve and through the port 28. At the commencement of the upstroke, the exhaust port is closed, mixture from the pump enters the working cylinder through ports 24, 25, 19, and air is drawn into the crank chamber from a port 16 and through the passage 27.
