Abstract
178,910. Wade, H., (Cage, J. M.). Jan. 20, 1921. Valves.-A two-stroke engine is provided with separate air and mixture admission ports near its ignition device and an exhaust port remote therefrom, and has valve means arranged so that, as the piston approaches the end of its power stroke, the exhaust port opens, air port opens, mixture port opens, air and exhaust ports close substantially together, and mixture port closes, in the order named. Fig. 1 shows a cylinder 12 fitted with sleeve valves 15, 16 and with a pair of pistons 17, 18 working on opposite sides of a partition 26 carried by the sleeve 15. On the down-stroke, the piston 18 draws in air below the partition through ports P<7>, 104, 105, and on the up-stroke forces this air through ports 106, 107, P<8> to a manifold 35, from which the air is delivered to the combustion head through ports P<2>, 92, 93, 14e, while the exhaust ports 90, 91, P<3>, P<4> are still uncovered. The piston 17, on the up-stroke, draws in air through ports P<6>, 100, 101, and on the downstroke forces that air through ports 102, 103, P<5>, and past a carburettor arranged in a manifold 45<a>, the carburetted air being afterwards admitted to the combustion chamber through ports P<1>, 94, 95, 14<d>, near the bottom dead-centre. Specification 178,222 is referred to. Valve-gear.-The sleeve valves are reciprocated by eccentrics E<1>, E<2>, each of which actuates the outer sleeves of two of the cylinders and the inner sleeves of the other two cylinders. The eccentric arms are connected respectively by arms 70, 72 fixed to concentric countershafts 71, 73. An arm 74 on the shaft 71 is connected by a rod 75 to a lever 76 operating the outer sleeves 16 of two cylinders in opposite directions, and another arm 86 on the shaft is similarly connected to a lever operating the inner sleeves 15 of the other two cylinders. Similarly, an arm 82 on the sleeve 73 is connected by a rod 83 and lever to the inner sleeves 15 of the first pair of cylinders, and by an arm 78, rod 79, and lever 80 to the outer sleeves 16 of the second pair of cylinders. The outer sleeves move slightly ahead of the pistons, and the inner ones slightly behind them. Regulating.-The air-inlet ports P‹ are controlled by a hand-actuated valve 42, and the air inlets P<7> by a similar valve, or by two valves 38 connected by a rod 39.
