Valves; valve gear.-In a water-cooled engine in which a cylinder liner C is disposed within an extension A<1> of the crank case A, three inlet and two exhaust ports in the upper part of the cylinder are controlled by the sleeve valve G, which is driven through a self-aligning bearing J with a combined reciprocating and oscillating movement. At the end of the suction stroke, a port Q<1> in the liner is uncovered both by the piston and sleeve valve, and a supplementary charge of air or air and gas is either drawn or forced into the cylinder through this port.
