Abstract
632,573. Valves; cylinders. CAUDMONT, F. Nov. 16, 1945, No. 30857. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] An internal combustion engine is provided with a resiliently mounted rotary valve member 6 mounted on ball bearings 9, 10 and driven through a gear train 16 from a vertical shaft 21, the valve having a hemispherical lower portion forming the roof of the combustion space and being provided internally with a bladed turbine member to facilitate cooling of the head by air admitted through the passage 13 and exhausted at 14. The rotary head is mounted in an aluminium alloy head and rotates on a nitrided sleeve 5. The head has exhaust ports 2 and an admission port 3, and spark plugs are located at 4. Springs 8 serve to cushion the valve against explosion and compression forces. The shaft 7 of the turbine member, Fig. 10, is welded to the upper part of valve 6. The valve is made gas-tight by interengaging rings 18. The compression ratio may be varied by adjustment of the washer 22. The invention is applicable to Diesel type engines and also to two-stroke engines. For a two-stroke engine the admission port 3 is replaced by admission ports in the cylinder wall near the bottom of the piston stroke, mixture being supplied from the crank case.
