Abstract

335,635. MacKenzie, D. G. April 9, 1929. Two-stroke-cycle engines; cylinders, ports of.- An annular pump 6 surrounds the lower end of the power cylinder scavenging; air is compressed on the lower side of the pump piston and combustible mixture or charge air on the upper. The admission of air to the lower side of the pump and the admission of charge to and delivery from the upper side is controlled by a piston valve 31. The delivery of scavenge air is controlled by ports 22 in the pump piston. As shown the power piston works within coaxial sleeve valves 14, which control the direct admission of the working charge to and the exhaust from the combustion chamber. The pump piston is integral with the outer sleeve valve; both valves are driven by eccentrics from the crank shaft. The scavenge air passes from the ports 22 through passages 17 cut in the inner sleeve valve. In a modification, the sleeve valves are replaced by overhead lift valves worked off the cam shaft 32; the pump piston then has a depending sleeve working over a fixed cylinder.
