Abstract

172,706. Wilson, F. M. Sept. 7,1920. Valves; valve-gear.-Mixture drawn into the crank case of a four-stroke engine through the valve-controlled port 7 is compressed and delivered in two parts to the cylinder. The admission ports 4, 5 are controlled by a ported sleeve valve 14 sliding between the cylinders and piston, the piston overrunning the ports in the sleeve. The sleeve also controls the exhaust ports 25; on the suction stroke, the piston moves down some distance in the sleeve before any ports open, thus producing a vacuum and assisting lubrication. At half crank-case compression, the top admission port 4 opens and some mixture enters; towards the end of suction stroke, the bottom admission port 5 is uncovered and the remainder of the charge is forced in, the pistons having completed compression in the crank case. On the compression and firing strokes, the ports are closed either by the sleeve or by the piston. The half-speed shaft 18 driving the sleeve valve is offset so that the sleeve moves down quicker than up. The ports 4, 5 on the sleeve valve and the supply pipes and ports may be duplicated for each cylinder.
