Abstract

492,886. Charging two- and fourstroke - cycle engines. ERREN, R. A. Dec. 28, 1936, Nos. 32508 and 32709. [Class 7 (ii)] During each charging stroke air compressed in the crank-case is fed unthrottled to the cylinder and, after closure of the exhaust and air ports 9, 10, a charge of atomized fuel and air is injected towards the ignition plug. The amount varies with the engine speed so as to produce constant final compression and stratification of the charge, an engine-driven blower 14 and valve 15 being employed. The charge may be injected through the cylinder head, mushroom valves or baffles being employed to effect lateral movement. Injection takes place during crank-shaft angular movement of not less than about 30‹, and is completed before the piston has traversed half its compression stroke. Blower pressure is at least twice that of the prevailing cylinder pressure.
